Electronic viewfinder - gobs of info if I want, and seeing the image before you take it
Silent shutter - totally silent and works in every mode but flash
Reasonably quiet mechanical shutter
Electronic Shutter - less wear and tear
Sans mirror box - no vibration or noise
5 stop in camera stabilization - works with any lens and in conjunction with OSS on Sony lenses
Eye focus tracking
Smaller size and weight - if you choose lenses prudently
Customization - so much more
Less high ISO noise.
Chance to set up complete kit from scratch not piece meal.

The down side:

Not economical to replace lenses and accessories
Needed to learn new camera and menu

Gave up two very excellent cameras and some very good lenses.

Would I do it again?...most definitely.

Switching to the New Nikon Z7. My reason, my Nikon lenses all fit via an adapter and I gain Exceed 6 processing. What could be better.

You got a great camera. I did not find a great enough differences between the Riii and Rii to make me go to the Riii right now. Sony G glass is great glass (may be better than anything othe glass).

Enjoy your camera!!!

I was a pro Nikon and Canon shooter for more than 40 years, yes 40, and switched to Sony mirrorless back in January 2017 and have never looked back. I have Sony A7RIII, A7III and A6500 and love them all. I switched for many of the reasons the OP shared. No camera system is perfect, but my Sonys are closer to perfect for me than any other brand on the market. Love using them. And Sony has even better gear coming soon, can't wait.

As far as lenses, I have both Sony and Sigma glass, some expensive, some more affordable, but all excellent image quality, great for both my pro and personal shots. Full disclosure, I kept one of my Canon lenses, the 17mm f4 Tilt-Shift lens for architectural shooting. Use the Sigma MC-11 adapter for it on my Sony bodies and it works great. Cheers

Billnikon if you are primarily a still shooter, and I mean really still subjects you will be ok. But Jared Polin (a Nikon guy himself) found issues with the Z-camera's ability to track and focus on moving sports subjects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6X-K9jju_0&t=761s

David of Kinotika found two issues with the Z cameras: first, severe rolling shutter in 4k video shooting, and a real latency problem with the Z camera's EVF, which could not keep up with video shooting, making it nearly impossible to follow your subject in video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4ipxrOCgwA

And JCristina shows that DPReview found heavy banding issues with the Z-cameras in still shooting, worse than the D850. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpurGS2FY9o&t=1s

Best of luck to you billnikon. I will stick to what I presently use and miss the teething pains of the other new FF mirrorless cameras. Cheers

You and I have experienced similar reasoning for the change to mirrorless "joer", my FF Nikon stands at the ready for the last two years, rather lonely in a closet. I am about to update my mirrorless from a Fuji XT2 to a XT3 and will never look back.

Cheers!

You can get lots of legacy lenses for cheap. Also lens brand makes no difference. Manual focus but with focus assist and peaking level your in focus
In short lots of fun

I do NOT like Sony. They are predatory - and I well remember their attempt to take over the "memory stick" market -
Which fortunately for users, failed miserably. BUT - - their RX-10 Mk-IV seems to be the one to beat.
Fortunately for me, I'm still well able to use my Canon 7 Mk-1, and 80D, WITH my stable of lenses and expect that to last for MANY years
By the time I need to refocus, the camera landscape will have been TOTALLY changed.
I'll wait until then.

Just a couple years ago, Canikon users would rather fight than switch. It is amazing how much that has changed. The A7II was my first "good" digital. Still have it, event though I recently upgraded to the A7III. To me the additional expense was not enough to tempt me to the A7R series for the extra resolution. Yes, lenses are expensive, but the G OSS models are exemplary. I recently found a Leica 50mm Summicron f2 lense in a second hand shop in deep east Texas and bought it for an embarrassingly low price. With a $35 adapter for Leica screw mount to Sony E mount, I have superb fast prime. It weighs almost a pound, but looks tiny compared to the Sony offerings. I don't mind focusing manually at all, going back to film roots. I'm glad I bought Sony.

Apologies to Merlin. They did get burned on Beta though, didn't they. Even though it was a superior format.

What finally did it was the review I read where the guy used the new Z7 with the adapter and the new 500MM 5.6 lens. What impressed me was the 9 fps RAW. I had been thinking about the D850 with the exceed 5 processor, but to get 9 fps I needed to buy a $150.00 battery and a vert expensive charger. The Z7 has the same meg count but has the exceed 6 processor and does not require anything extra to get that 9 fps. Plus, the camera is lighter and the 500 is also a lite weight. So, I hand hold 100 % of my wildlife shots and walk quite a bit. This new combo will do nicely.
I had the Sony A77II and the A99, so I am aware of the advantages of a electronic viewfinder. And now, all of my full frame Nikon lenses can be used on the Z7 with the adapter, which, contains no glass, just a tube, and nothing changes on my lenses, not the focal length, not the speed. Super cool.
Yes, I will be mirrorless soon once again.

You may want to research the Z7 some more.

Here is a excerpt from Thom Hogan:

Frames per second. Everywhere I see the cameras listed as 9 fps and 12 fps, and even Nikon Rumors is listing the D850 as 7 fps. Well, all those things have footnotes. The D850 can do 9 fps with the grip and the larger battery. The Z's can't do 9 fps and 12 fps without sacrificing exposure control and live view updates. Stated properly, the D850 is a 7 fps camera, the Z6 is a 9 fps camera, the Z7 is a 5.5 fps camera.

Correct the Z cameras has crippled frame rates if you shoot raw and want exposure control and live view updates. Billnikon dont overlook that Jared Polin (a Nikon guy) had hit and miss autofocus trying to use Z-cameras to focus and track sports subjects. Jared even said the Z-camera autofocus was not as good as a DSLR or Sony. DPREview found serious banding in Z-camera shots, along with severe rolling shutter. . And Kinotika found latency issues with the Z-camera EVF that couldnt keep up, not allowing you to follow in burst and video shooting.

Billnikon don't let your love of Nikon blind you to its shortcomings when you are spending a ton of money and expecting great performance. Buyer beware of any first ventures which are full of teething pains. Don't let the hype from the manufacturer and their paid "pros" overwhelm your good senses. Cheers
