I am going to be shooting 395 from Topaz to Mono next week -OCT 10 & 11 - I shot Mono at the So shore last year at sundown /dark and would like to do it again this year - any tips on locations for shooting tofas as foreground and stars in background. Last year I didn't have the time to spend as I do this year. Mono is going to be my
'night" shots - Bodie and Conway Summit, and hwy 88- 89 395 are going to get my attention going and coming along- with Buckeye and Travertine Hot Springs.
PMs welcome

Hey Harvey, it sounds like a great trip. I'll be up there over the weekend.

The South Shore Tufa viewing area will give you great views of the night sky, and the Tufa mounds. The Milky Way will be to the south, opposite the Tufa, but you'll be able to get the core, sky and the surrounding hills. I've shot the MW from the North Shore of Mono, off of Lundy Lake road, but cannot remember the location. I was close to the lake shore and the Milky Way was rising above the lights of Lee Vining.

One big issue with the south tufa area is yahoos at night with flashlights ruining long exposures.

Drive to Conway Summit, which has a glorious view of the lake basin, a 30 sec exposure should get the sky in great detail and light streaks on 395 from vehicles. Might try to do that myself.

Thanks - I was originally going to camp on Lundy Lake rd so I'll swing in there after coming over Conway - I will definitely be scouting for southern shots with some kind of decent background for the MW -I am also thinking of night/MW shots at Travertine Hot Springs - I'll scout that out while I am in Bridgeport. Looking forward to sharing photos.

Isn't it great to have lived in such a wonderful location - In my past I have had the good fortune to have done so myself - mostly the mountain mining towns of CO, NV, CA, ID & Mt -15 yrs at SO.Lke Tahoe- But also many years in the "East BAY" - 50 mi inland from San Francisco as well as 5 yrs on the Yucatan Peninsula of MX near Cancun . Ya this 'Old Bear" has been fortunate to now have a decent camera to record these areas beauty.

It is indeed a photographer's paradise. Been skiing at Mammoth Lakes since 1969 and lived there for almost six years. You might try the aspen groves in the June lake area and the Lundy lake area. The colors should be gorgeous. Check the weather forecasts: It has been known to snow in October in the Lee Vining/Mammoth Lakes 395 corridor. Have a great trip!

So true - I know from my past years about the late Sept & early Oct storms - right now - today - 100% chance of rain in Lee Vining - but clearing to clear thru the next 10 days 50% and up day time and dropping more each night to the mid 20s later next week - Had not heard of Lundy Lake till I looked into camping along Mill Creek - that is going to be my first stop when I get in the Mono area coming from Conway and Bodie.

ROTFLMAO - Kingsbury is "NOT" a highway it is a paved mountain goat trail - that is to us who remember it from back in the 60s and 70s -Oh the tails told by "Surviving " tourist of their trek out and over from Genoa. LOL
The same was with the "Old" Red Lake side of Carson Pass - one lane with pull-outs.

Harvey, no suggestions on individual tufas, but take a good flashlight and do a drag the shutter shot at sundown and light paint. That always creates some beautiful shots. With luck you’ll have color in the sunset.
Stay alert and get a nice Blue Hour tufa shot as well!! Have a great trip!
