I celebrated my retirement party last night with 100 of my best friends. Looking forward to pursuing my photographic passion and enjoying every minute. Best of luck to you and may "the image be with you."Neil

Jim - Best wishes on your journey into retirement. Springfield is just an hour away from Eureka Springs, AR., and judging from your photo, I'd guess you would get a kick out of our quirky little town if you have never been here before. Why not drop by for a beer and take a few pics? Maybe I can arrange a meeting with the local photo club out at Holiday island - I know they would really appreciate talking with a real pro about our hobby.

Jim: You are one of the good guys in our society. Have you given any thought to running for a elected office. Honesty and compassion are far too rare in our political world?

Ha!...and you thought you were retiring. A great thing your doing - love the giving back thing - but that my friend is a whole lot of work.

When I retired I began posting my studio equipment for sale and near give-a-way because I didn't want it any longer. Then someone suggested I keep it all and give free lessons so others could learn photography.

So I decided instead to do a limited amount of photography free of charge. A couple of weddings a year and a couple of senior portraits a week during that season. And then High School sports and give parents pictures of their athletes. It will give me something to do with my time and allow people to save a little money.

So I am headed to Springfield MO this weekend for my test run. Friday morning shopping, then lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, afternoon check into a hotel and hang out at the pool, evening out for dinner perhaps with friends. Saturday morning meet the bride at her hair dressers for photos, then to where everyone is getting ready to take pictures of that, then it's off to the outdoor wedding. Friday will be relaxing, Saturday will fly by. Next week editing. Posting full size images on my website so the bride can download and print what she wants wherever she wants. Then sending her the smaller images so she can post what she wants on social media.

I think I am going to enjoy turning my business into a hobby.

When I retired I continued to do some of the things I had been doing prior to retirement. Then I wondered, "How is this different from having a job ?" Sort of like what you are doing. The difference is, we don't have to do it, its our choice, and that makes it less like work and more like fun. Enjoy your 'retirement' !

Key to retirement is being able to afford doing what you want when you want to do it. Sounds like you're on that path!

=============

Now, this is another really cool idea.

I have given "Photo-Talks" at a few camera clubs over the years as well. It is a really good way to not only share your talents and experience, but it is also helping others in a very positive way.

Make sure that those you do things for free understand you are giving them something of value. I do a few seniors each year but have the kids do some work for me to pay for them. I also do a Wedding or two. (after a triple bypass I do not book weddings ahead) But I seem to do a few each year for free. I love doing Weddings but have to make sure folks know I am giving something of value and that they need to cooperate when I am talking pictures. Many people think that free means that what you are doing is not of much value. I had one couple that did not even send a thank you note but told some friends I would do their Wedding for free. Anyway have fun - I do. - Dave
