Thank you Karin, David, Cotondog, Gary, Larry, deanfl, Marty, Bill, Greg, rmm0605! I've pulled together images from a few visits over the summer where the focus had been more on birds at the zoo. But, a sunny day with the light coming through the skylight really helps with the gorillas during the visit shown here.

Thank you Medoitham, nimbushopper! I have several images of JoJo at Brookfield and he always seems to have the same look. Maybe it's just the way he looks at me? For Nora, I'd almost think she recognizes me and goes into photogenic antics as a result of my attention, but I know that even if I set up for an hour to 3, it's only every 6- to 8-months so the recognition is probably only in my mind. Glad you enjoyed.

I remember the first time I visited the zoo back in 1959. The trip took one "L" and two buses. It was like visiting a land of wonder. It became a biennial event for us to go to Brookfield. The other zoo, of course, was Lincoln Park. (One bus back then.) Both zoos were working to have the outdoor areas become naturalized.

Thank you for evoking fond memories with your photography.

Thank you Stephan! The Lincoln Park Zoo is a straight shot down Clark on the #22 from my place in Chicago. But, I've never yet tried the public transportation adventure to Brookfield. Rather, when I have a rental for chores, I try to add an extra day for a trip to Brookfield. Glad you enjoyed.

These are wonderful, Paul! Our Jacksonville zoo just reopened the Great Ape exhibit with a brand new area. I'm so glad the old exhibit areas are gone and zoos are so much better nowadays. Thanks for sharing and information too! I really enjoyed these.

Thank you roxiemarty! I have be in the Jacksonville area in November. The trip is mostly to south Florida, but the drive back north might be altered to the east side to see what's going on at your zoo. Thank you for the tip.

Ali, a female, was born June 1, 2018 to mother Koola, age 23. Ali joins the four-generation family group of western lowland gorillas currently at the Brookfield Zoo in suburban Chicago. Almost 350 western lowland gorillas are now living in accredited North American zoos. The western lowland gorilla is considered critically endangered, and experts estimate there are just 200,000 living in their native West Africa habitat (the forests of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria, Congo, and Angola).

Gorillas weigh between 4 and 5 pounds at birth, smaller than the average human baby. Although the infant will start to sample small pieces of food at about four months old, nursing will continue until about four years old.

Baby Ali and Koola

Ali, at about 3-months. Shortly, she'll start riding on her mother’s back, and about a month later, she will begin to explore the habitat on her own while staying within an arm’s reach of Koola.

Ali - born June 1, 2018

Gorillas live in social groups comprised of one adult male, several adult females, a number of youth and infants. As they reach sexual maturity, both male and female gorillas leave their original social groups and either establish a new group or join an existing one. Nora, age 4, and step-brother Zachary, age 2.

The group's silverback and father of all three youngsters is 35-year old JoJo. JoJo was brought over from the Lincoln Park Zoo in 2012 as part of the Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP), which promotes healthy breeding and population management for species. He is one of the most genetically valuable males in the SSP population and his calm temperament has been an especially good match for the adult females at Brookfield Zoo.

Also known as the Chicago Zoological Park, the Brookfield Zoo is located in the Chicago suburb of Brookfield, Illinois. The zoo houses around 450 species of animals in an area of 216 acres. It opened on July 1st 1934 and quickly gained international recognition for using moats and ditches instead of cages to separate animals from visitors and from other animals.

Paul, PaPa has kind of a Clint Eastwood stare that seems to be directed towards your location. Good series.

Thank you so much for the memories. I still call Chicgo home. I remember getting picture of polar bears in sub 0 temps in '76.

Lovely set, beautiful clarity in the hair. But I'm giving PAPA JOJO a wide berth!

Thank you Tom, PixelStan77, Erik, TBerwick, Jack, Dan, Jack! The gorilla exhibit at Brookfield is rather unique for the zoos I've visited where portions of the exhibit are at eye-level and the entire exhibit has no glass, just a moat. On a Monday afternoon in last September, the human traffic at the zoo was low enough to have room to set-up a tripod with an extended lens to 420mm. Glad you enjoyed.

Great pictures and I really enjoyed reading about them too. Ali looks so sweet. Living just outside of Columbus, I love going to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium to shoot. Jack Hanna has done a fabulous job of turning that zoo around from what it was the first time I went there about 45 years ago.
