If used, I’m sure some DA somewhere, probably California, will prosecute you for damaging the ears of your assailant, they will apply for workman’s comp, you will face a federal suit for violating the rights of the perpetrators to assault you and a civil suit by the perpetrators for causing ptsd. I live in Texas where you still have the right to defend yourself.
You hit the nail on the head with your California comments.
I guess there are some advantages to being poor.
Unless someone would think my Medic Alert necklace would be worth something.

Carrying a firearm particularly to a foreign country is the damn dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Not only do you put yourself in a precarious position for further violence, you make yourself a target for local police. It's an unfortunate reality that crime does not allow us to use the photographic equipment we would like to but that's the reality of life. Lest you think I am some sort of anti-gun tree-hugging liberal, I am not. I am an experienced gun owner who no longer carries a gun and a Viet Nam era vet. Once you pull your gun, you had better be ready to use it (take a life, that's what it's for ultimately) otherwise don't carry it. It's a slippery slope only authorized trained personnel should have the responsibility of having. A camera, jewelry etc. can always be replaced.

So then you advocate just giving thieves whatever they want to preserve life.
As an experienced gun owner you probably know that those who fight back have a better chance of survival than those who do not. You must also know that firearms are carried and displayed to bandits hundreds of thousands times a year but not fired. Simply showing you have a firearm wards off most thugs.
As an ex cop I refuse to give up anything.

So by your standard, a skimpily attired woman deserves to get raped! Sure blame the victim "rich Americans". Seriously, you need an education!
Absolutely a "skimpily attired woman" does not deserve to be raped any more than "rich Americans" deserve to be robbed. However there are things one can do to make then less likely to become a victim. Certainly a skimpy outfit in a club is different than walking a street in a shady area. Same goes for touring, be it Europe, Asia, US or anywhere. Use descresion. Carry your expensive camera while touring, that's what it was purchased for. Just do it in a safe manner. Use situational awareness, street smarts.
I’m not sure if you want to go that route my friend. Dont get me wrong I believe everyone should use their 2nd amendment right to a weapon, i carry concealed everyday. Now between being in the Navy and then the Army after that, i have also been to tactical training classes. In every instance of training you are taught not to pull your weapon unless you feel your life or someone elses life is in danger or great bodily harm. Now being in your 70’s the amount of force you are allowed to escalate to, if you feel your life or someones life is in danger, can be reached sooner. This being said though you cant pull your weapon just because you are being tapdanced robbed. If someone pulls a weapon this is a different story. And if you are going to carry and you dont want to carry a full size weapon, dont go with the pico. My buddy got his daughter one and soon realized how bad it actually was and upgraded her. I carry a compact px4 storm berretta. But a nice small very concealable weapon is the glock 43, and its reliable my wife carrys one. You never want to have to use it but if you do need it you will be glad you had it, just not to save a camera...
Situational Awareness! No matter where you are. Minimize to what you really need only. Keep your hand free. Use a sling type strap for your camera and if possible hook it to one of your belt loops not your belt. If you must carry a wallet, do so in your front pocket and wrap a rubber band around it. Stay safe.
I just wear a T-shirt that says on both sides, “you don’t messa with my camera, I won’t breaka yo FACE”!!!
So far so good!!! LoL

Now wings, what would you do, pull out your gun and start shooting? Or would you just threaten to shoot? Either way, you'd be putting bystanders in jeopardy. Think how you'd feel if you hurt someone. Think how you'd feel when the cops pulled you into the station...might ruin your vacation.
