Always liked Coltrane, your an academic Mark, have you ever read a book called 'Jazzy Physics'? Its based on physics from a music perspective, I'm going thru it now and it does join the music and jazz to make it a good read! I'm still banging on my Ibanez, my fingers aren't long enough for MIV but I like the way Johnny Smith plays it.

Thanks, Dick. I have not read that. I played trumpet for years - mainly jazz - but I gave my trumpet to my grandson. He's beginning to play jazz in his 8th grade jazz orchestra.

I played trumpet back in jr high, I was first chair in the Denver City junior orchestra; had to play a solo for Mother's Day concert, 1000 people there, nervous as hell, when I got up to the mike I blew out my spit valve, my mother almost fainted!! But I played my solo with no problems, played Trumpeters Llulaby, my God, that was around 1952-53!! I gave up the trumpet as my asthma got worse, didn't take much breathing to play guitar, now old Arthur is slowly making me think about playing my iPad!!

I had similar experience. Helped form a group - sax, trombone, me, drums & piano when I was 14. Took train to NYC with the piano guy, bought stock arrangements - learned 3 arrangements and we were hired for our first gig - community center. Played those 3 arrangements all night long - made $2 man. 😅

I am an octogenarian former lead trumpet (no longer have the chops -don't play anymore), who appreciated the artistry of McCoy Tyner and many sax players, but never was a fan of Coltrane. Today's musicians are mostly technical freaks with little soul to their playing. Where are the players who understand what a composer wrote and not embellish beyond recognition of the composer's intent? I am not denigrating people who really appreciate Coltrane, he just never appealed to me.

I'm surprised you took the time to view my post. Did you miss the subject line? I'm an octogenarian too. Sorry you cannot hear the artistry and genius of Trane.
Thanks for viewing.

I'm also an octogenarian and though I'm a jazz guitarist, I can appreciate the artistry of other jazz musicians; singers, horns, piano, and reeds! Coltrane was indeed a genius in his genre, as were Montgomery, Smith, Kessel, Pass, et al in my genre!

They were all great!! Pass is buried in New Brunswick - about 15 miles from where I live. Loved all of them.
Thanks, Dick. Do you still perform?
