My wife and I were part of a group that visited unique locations to celebrate our 40th birthdays. I don't remember whose birthday this was, but after work on a Friday (Memorial Day weekend) we flew to Las Vegas and drove to the North Rim Lodge in Arizona. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is higher than the South Rim, pine forest rather than desert. We arrived in the wee hours of the morning and bunked down in our rustic cabin. When we awoke, we were surprised to find that snow had fallen after our arrival. This picture shows the patio outside the main building of the North Rim Lodge. By about 1:00 in the afternoon, the fog had lifted, the snow had melted, and it was about 75-80 degrees with beautiful views of the canyon all around us. Wonderful memories.

We were there for a photo class sponsored by UC Santa Cruz. As we convened the first class, a Ranger entered our classroom and said that the park was closing due to a wildfire inside the park. Since we were already in the park and the fire was relatively distant from the Lodge we were given the option to evacuate or stay. Unanimous vote to stay (of course). We were almost the only visitors in the park for the length of our class. No one new was allowed in. We had to get our meals with the staff in their commissary. It was the most wonderful National Park experience I ever have had. One of a life time!
I won't describe in detail, the last day, when the park was reopened. The tour busses poured out their quantities of people taking a quick view at the Canyon from the Lodge , stating their "Golly, what a gully!" inanities and asking "How Long Will it take to get to 'Vegas'?"

I'm just amazed that you could get a reservation at all. I have been there several times but just for the day because when I look for reservations, they seem to book up almost entirely at the first of the year and I rarely know that far ahead what I am going to be available for later in the year when they open. Loved the shot.

next time try booking a cabin at the Kaibab Lodge its 18 miles from the North Rim. the cabins sleep from 2 too 10 people;prices range from $90.00 on up;and has a res.with good home cooked meals wildlife all over the place an there is a store and a gas station right across the street. Jacob lake is about 50 miles away and is the only other lodge o/s the North Rim.Look it up on the internet its a great place to stay and very quiet and pretty.There is also a camp ground next to it with about 20 sites I think it was $15.00 or $20.00 a night to stay there.
