I've never heard that as a generic term. Is that Eastern Shore?

I've known a few restaurants that used "Belly Buster" for a specific sandwich before.

Our national language gets less colorful with every single national television commercial.

Another South Jersey boy here, 8 miles from Philly. Hoagie is the word of choice. Gotta love that capicola ham. Damn I'm hungry now. Been living in VA for 4 decades and REAL hoagies only recently started to become available. We have a few Jersey Mike's and they come pretty close to what I grew up on.

Constant humidity and low altitude are essential to good Italian or French bread, and I'm well above sea level here in VA. Breads brought in from other states or baked in specialty ovens have recently enabled some quality sandwiches here. Have I mentioned how hungry I am?

I have yet to find a good "Grinder" or Hoagie in Lynchburg, where many family members live, and where we've just bought a second home, for exactly the reasons you mention. When Subway is the best in town, you know it's slim pickins. I'll be down next week, any place you'd recommend, either for bread or sandwiches?

Whoever said "Speidie" is incorrect. A spiedie is meat on a skewer, whether on a roll or not. "Speidie sub" may be more correct usage.
I'm in upstate NY and that's where they're from.

In Pittsburgh, While you see "sub" used in advertising (I blame TV), Most people call such a sandwich a "Hoagie" - Probably the thing Pittsburgh and Philadelphia agree on!

Phila Deli at 4925 Boonsboro Rd. I buy both bread and meats/cheeses there. It's been a while but I don't think quality has changed.

One I do whenever I get that "thanksgiving taste" - large fresh roll toasted (style of your choice) heavy on the turkey (fresh roasted, or smoked) with dressing, mashed potato, green bean casserole (or greens and cooked onion-preferably Vidalia) heavy cranberry and whatever else you like at thanksgiving in layers. Fold it up and dip it in the turkey gravy, or pour the gravy on and fold (messy) or open face style. There are probably 10-15 versions of this theme alone.

But what do the shops advertise them as? Is that a generic thing in the Dallas area?

They used to advertise those as "Pilgrims", Pilgrim....

There are a lot of references to Spiedie as a generic term for a sub/hero. Might be kind of like the "Italian" change in use from specific to generic. It seems to be almost exclusive to Binghamton, though...
