Some of us have to work with computers to support our photography habits.

That is sort of my point, I actually want to get something done with my PP, i.e., ACR and Ps, than spend my time manually maintaining a O/S, and then get back to shooting more photographs.

GIMP is great but has a looong learning curve. For more intuitive Linux compatible editors I choose Light Zone or Polarr, also open source.

Adobe will not accept Linux. It goes against their standards. Any of the aforementioned pieces of software have one thing that adobe will never allow. They are open source, and if you know how to edit code and some piece does not work how you want... You are free to change it!. Bye bye to adobe's lockdown. Darktable is fantastic for what I do, and for heavier post I pass the image to gimp as a tiff. Can't compare to LR as I never used it, PS I only used marginally when I was a newspaper printer.

If you use DarkTable and then GIMP, are you working a JPG in GIMP? Whereas, in LR or Capture One, you are working on a RAW file. Is this true? And if true, is it significant?

With most software, you are working with a “native” version. Once you have input the image, you are working with the “gimp” version until you export it - not a “JPEG” or other version.

Wow, all this computer geeking and so many people on the UHH (bitch that) they are too lazy or don't have the time to properly learn Photoshop CC, yet they, but hopefully are not the same people have time to run command line and manually installed O/S s over using Windows or Mac. Do some UHH member actually have the time to go out and take pictures.

Once I got it running, I don’t spend any more time maintaining Ubuntu than I spent maintaining Win8.
