I was in the Trade Center having just gotten off the PATH train some time after the first plane struck and around 20 minutes or so before the second. I was standing half way up the block from the South Tower towards Broadway when I turned for a second and saw the second plane crash into it. Not knowing how far the debris field would spread I ran for my life down Broadway and was pelted by tiny pieces of debris and concrete dust. The outer pockets of my no longer used canvas attache case still contain remnants of the concrete dust. I ran to JPMorgan at 15 Wall Street where I had one of my two desks. Looking across the street at the NY Stock Exchange I thought it might be the next target so I ran to my other office located in the JP Morgan building at 60 Wall. St. If was from the 38th floor there that I had a clear view of the South Tower from around the 40th floor up and saw it quiver a bit, lean very slightly and start to pancake.
Although it will be 17 years tomorrow I have not gone back to the Trade Center site since that day. I can't do it. Too many bad memories of things I saw and friends lost. I can't even watch images of that day on TV. Tourists pay homage making the trek there but they can never understand what it was like to actually be right there. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
