What is this stuff.
What is that white splotches that are between tree limbs for example. Almost looks like a huge spider web but the weave is much closer together. Thanks.

Please post photos of this problem, including macros, if possible.

I think what you are looking at is a "Web-Worm" Nest....
Tent Caterpillars is another. They can kill trees if leaves are stripped a couple of years in a row. Used to be massive problems in Maine when I was growing up.

There are spring webworms and summer webworms. If the spring webworms come early enough, a tree can send out another set of leaves. Summer webworms don't leave the tree enough time to do that.
When I was a kid (long, long ago) we would make a torch out of a stick, a rag, and some kerosene and just apply the flame to the web. You had to be careful because the worms inside would all fall on you unless you were well off to the side. No real problem, just an ewwwww factor. That sort of solution is only available in well populated areas. The worms would be a real problem in forests.
I believe you'll find different names for them depending on where you are. One I heard somewhere that stuck with me was 'bag worms'. Pretty descriptive.
