my first camera had only one slot. It worked fine. As I advanced my 2nd camera has two slots. No Big deal at first, then I started to learn about shooting RAW. Takes up more memory space. However one slot is set up for JPEG and one for RAW. Gives me more flexibility. But it's not a selling point if I upgrade cameras. Also Also when I started out memory cards were at most 32mb. Now they are 164 mb.

If you want 2 slots then buy for your needs. If you only need one then do likewise

Just because you don’t understand it, it doesn’t mean that others who do understand it should not talk about it.

I think the poster expressed understanding incredibly well. It's simple and that simplicity can escape some. If you need two, get a camera with two. If you don't feel that is important, get a camera with one slot. Either way, the camera will work for the user and all is well.

If he did, he wouldn’t have started this thread. Personally, I don’t need 2 cards, but it isn’t about us snapshot shooters, but those professionals, who need to make sure that in case there is a failure, they must have another card recording. How hard is that to understand? If you are going to charge the same amount as the cameras with 2 slots, you either include it or charge less.

It's because some of these so called pros can't shoot with one slot. Because they need to take 1500 shots to get 15 keepers!

Nope we just need back up when a card fails.

It's like insurance. It's better to have it and not need it than to not have it and need it. When it comes to a paycheck, livelihood, and reputation, the extra card slot is a peace of mind.

And like insurance, the best insurance is the coverage you never use.

And, like some insurance, it can be a terrible deal.

Keep in mind that many things upstream of the card can fail the file. I wonder if anyone has ever had one card fail and not the other?

The added complexity of two card slots adds to the camera parts that can fail.

I doubt adding one redundant part makes the camera system more reliable. The human mind is wonderful at misunderstunding probability, and thus reliability.

Four pages and I'll bet everybody overlooked the most important point ... image quality.

Just compare an image from a single slot camera to one from a camera with two slots. The one from a dual slot camera will always look better.

Goes without saying - more slots = superior images. Thought everyone knew that already!

What you are basically saying is, hey I only drive on paved roads, why would all those people need 4x4 just because they are off reading?

Are you a comedian by any chance?

I agree. In my case, I like the second slot as an added backup, but if you are not a backup freak as I am (RAID, extra drives, etc. on my computers), you will probably do well with one slot. The exception would be on a can't reshoot project such as an African safari where the costs of a memory failure would be catastrophic.

Oh boy
Did I re-open a contentious question.
Simple statement with about 8 pages of responses covering almost every subject.
Again. If you need two slots buy a system that has it. If you only need one do likewise. End of diuscussion
