The Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, that is. He seems to like hanging out on the side of the freeway (on two different days), which is raised up over a flood plain area. He is a juvenile and really has pretty markings.

Nice Katy! I lived in Woodland and Sacramento as a youngster but never learned to use the Yolo Bypass for birding. Time to start thinking about visits to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuges.

Phil, I live right near the Bypass Wildlife Area and go often. Right now is not a good time as all the water is drying up except for a small rice field area. As for the Sac Refuge, we went there yesterday and it was a major disappointment. Very little water there, too, and full ditches seemed to be flowing toward rice fields. Summer and fall in California is not very kind to birds.
