What camera and feature would you like in your custom built?
That would be cool. But with such a variety on the market, it is almost like that now.
I'm sure it would be real cheap too. LOL
Whilst not exactly "Custom built " the Olympus OM D E M1 and others are highly customisable.
I'm in the process of doing some customizing to one of possibly two cameras at the moment. Right now, it's just in the analysis/design stage and hopefully be a working model by year's end.

Ricoh, I think tried this a bit ago. And Canon was doing something, but it might have been more for security and/or video units. Also, on the high end, the HASSELBLAD X1D is designed to be upgradeable.

Is this film or digital and what are you customizing the body or some function of both? This soundd interesting :-)
I don't think it's possible but let dream on! Please tell us what your custom built camera is like? I would love to know.
It's a 4x5. I have two of them. The lens boards for one will not fit the front standard of the other. The solution is simple. Make a new front standard for the second one and machine it so the lens boards are interchangeable between the two. Then, make a new rear standard that will accept my digital camera in place of the film. At this point, I'm analyzing the possibility of purchasing a third view camera for the digital mounting.

I've made all sorts of things that I've needed for photography in a machine shop. I use computer numerically controlled milling machines and lathes. If you need some machining done, I could probably do it for you. The latest thing I made is an Arca-Swiss plate with a support for my 80-400mm lens. I got the dimensions for the Arca-Swiss dovetails from the Really Right Stuff website. I later sent the aluminum parts out for hard anodizing.
I bet deleting video would be a popular choice - not a wise choice, but a popular one.
The only thing you would do is not put on options that are on the camera now that you don't use and pay a lot more for the camera.
Customization may sound good, but really the only way that would work out would be to simply offer a specific list of choices from which to choose. Such as regular or articulating screen, video or no video, DX or FX, sensor size from a specific list, etc. There would be limitations on how different combinations could be put together because of what will fit into a given body. It would present a lot of problems in terms of manufacture, compatibility of elements, etc. Actually, to some extent, with all the choices available, you can pretty much find cameras that fit every need. For instance, I have video capability on my cameras, which I do not use. But it does not get in the way, I simply ignore it. Standardizing a camera model actually reduces its cost of production. So in my opinion, custom built would be far more expensive, so most of us would probably not be able to afford them. If you have unlimited funds, however, I suggest going to a camera company and request a custom build - if it is worth their while, I suspect they would build it for you. People have custom cars, custom kitchen cabinets, etc. It simply necessitates finding the appropriate craftsman to do it and paying the price!
