Sometimes high ISO can get you decent results

It was later evening when this GBH flew in to where we were fishing. I was hesitant to even shoot, but thought I'd try. This is ISO 12,800 with exposure compensation set at +0.7. Shot on Shutter priority at 160/sec. He was close, so not much crop needed. I realize these are a bit "soft" as the aperture had to be at 5.6 and not at the sweet spot of 7.1-9....

Well done. The right camera body helps greatly in these instances. vz

Hi Swartfort! You said "He was close so no crop needed." How nice! When I get that close they fly away! (I presume that you had a longer lens than a wide angle.) The low light made you set a high ISO but it worked! I hope that, along with a good picture, you also got some fish--both of you! -- PixieJackie

I shoot with a Nikon D3400 "entry level" body. I can only imagine the results a D7500 or D500 would produce.

Yes, he flew into us!! Probably 35 yards. I was using a D3400 with a AF-S 70-300 4.5-5.6 ED G lens. Low light, long lens forced a high ISO. The combination of settings plus the need for very little cropping, along with some PP tweaking got the results. Unfortunately, he was much better at fishing than we were, so my captured images were the highlight of the fishing trip. Thanks for the compliments/comments!!!

Great shot and a great image. The first rule is "get the shot" even if it means a high ISO. I can't tell you many shots I've missed because I stayed at too low of an ISO to avoid noise. The under exposed shots need a lot of post work which brings more noise.
