I do disagree with you. I run a workshop for photographers that photograph as a hobby and every person that I introduce and teach Lightroom to absolutely love the program. Some may take a few pictures a week and some may take thousands a week. All the same. Lightroom was developed with any kind of photographer in mind and I LOVE IT! and so would anyone else that learned what it's all about.
Shooting Raw is the topic and I always shoot Raw. I've tried almost every application and program out there and Lightroom is by far the best for any Photographer shooting Raw or Jpeg.
It makes photography fun because it is so user friendly.
Why does it bother you that I like it so much and want to tell others?
What you said about "It is geared toward a particular market and for others it is like buying a multi-ton earth mover when what you need is an SUV"? Sorry you feel that way but not true. Beginners, old timers, professionals all alike. Lightroom is the best. Try it!

Ive been a professional photographer for the past thirty years! I never shoot in raw!! If you like raw, fine, but you are no longer a photographer, youve become a computer technician. A true photograher does all the correct proceedures, like croping, shooting with the correct f stops and shutter speeds and ISOs while doing the shoot. Sure, I use Photoshop for minor corrections and I only shoot in jpeg!! Shooting in raw makes you a slave to the computer, and makes you a poor photographer! Many times, Ive asked young so called photographers, if they calibrate their cameras before a shoot, and they don't even know what Im talking about, they shoot in raw and correct their mistakes on the computer. If you want to make money in photography reduce the time you spend on the computer and spend more time improving your photograhic skills!!

That is like say that a man that uses an electric tool such as an electric planner as opposed to a hand plane is not a true cabinet maker. It just doesn't fly these days, 100 years ago yes, now no. You don't calibrate the camera you simply lock in the settings that other wise you would adjust in post processing. In short you deliberately choose to lessen you flexibility. While that may imply a higher level of skill with the camera it does not imply a better photographer, just a less versatile one.

This thread seems to be steering down a dangerous path of "better than you" mentality. Can we all play nice here and find a way to share preferences rather than what makes someone "real" at what they do? Photography is a big world, and I for one, am fascinated by all the various skills and interests.

helveyphotography - Please start a seperate thread entitled "Shooting in JPG". I promies to NOT disparage your thread as you have done so here.

P.S. - According to some, true photographers only shoot film.

I always shoot in RAW and have Elements 9 and can edit there. I love raw and would never go back to jpg. There are more options for editting.

If you think about it, all cameras shoot in Raw. Most then use their internal computer to process the image for you into a Jpeg. If your camera allows you to download the Raw image, you now have the advantage of doing the processing yourself using a Raw editing program.

Elements 9 has an Adobe Raw converter although it is rather limited compared to the full version in Photoshop. This also lets you process as a 16 bit image with a fantastic amount of overhead for processing your image.

When you have processed the image to your liking then resize for Email, the web, etc and convert to an 8 bit Jpeg and sharpen. If you want to print then use your hi res image and size to the print size. However, sharpening should always be the last operation after re sizing.

Once you learn to process in Raw, you'll love it but it does take more time.

Once again, try out different programs, shoot raw and then shoot jpg... see what fits YOUR STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY the best... whats easy and good of one might be difficult for someone else. We all photograph for different reasons.
Personally, I usually shoot raw and jpg because my Nikon D90 does an excellent job of providing high resolution jpgs. Raw files are very large files so make sure you have enough memory to take many shots... also my D90 will take 4.5 frames per second (which I often use when photographing kids at play) and jpg works better than raw for me... Try it out, see if you like it. If you don't like post processing (regardless of the program used) you won't want to shoot raw... We all have choices and we all have our opinions... share what works for you and why and let each person decide for themselves...

OH BTW I have the Tshirt hehehheheheh I SHOOT RAW !!!!

Well you are observant.. I was out with the bomb squad on a real time mission.. The guys from the Bomb squad decided I needed to experience first hand what it was like to wear that thing in 90 degree heat. Only problem is, the bomb tech who wears it is 6' tall and I'm 5'3. The suit with full balistic plates weighs in around 110 pounds. As you can see by the sleeve length , ummmm it was a bit too big for me so I only got the top and helmet. I have since worn the full suit (made for us little people) Didn't realize how much fun it was blowing things up ... and learning about negative pressure blasts... I know... too much information :D
