This was my favorite set-up for many years - now that I live in short driving distance to most anything I care to photo I drive my '89 Ford Bronco 11 or my '00 Ford Expedition and take a pic-nic basket.

Harvey that shot looks like a Disney travelogue photo. Very cool. Bet you wish you still had the Jeep.

Yep -that set up was my retirement present to my self when I retired from the grocery stores at 56 on disability at 62 when I retired on SS I sold it and we moved to MX for 5 yrs - "camped" LOL in my daughter's cabana on the Caribbean 25 mi south of Cancun.
This was a tough site to wake up to every morning - but we stuck it out as long as we could.

Here's the progress. The factory had a flu bug that took out production for a week. I'm scheduled to pick it up at the factory 9/12. Looks are deceiving... That front wall is vertical and the sidewall slopes inward. That open area at the top of the front will get the skin on and a 40"x9" window. Side windows and kitchen door yet to be added. Once the windows are in the sidewalls get studs installed. Double doors in the back will allow loading two motorcycles. That opening in the side will get a door and be under a kitchen bench at a dropdown table/bunk.

OK, folks! It's finally here! I took last week to drive to Iowa and see the factory weld up the final pieces and pick up the camping pod. I didn't add the roof rack yet, just to keep costs in control, but that's simple. Overall height when it's loaded on the truck is 9'6".

Now to get out and have some fun!

Not certain where to post this one... Wondering what photo specific vehicles (if any) people have come up with for travels? I've seen a couple in Yosemite and online. Sketches below are a camping pod I'm working on that will travel onboard my truck but can be downloaded to the ground via hydraulic lift.

What are you traveling in?

Thoughts?

Why not a "woody"?

I drive around in an old Ford Bronco. Less than ideal
accomodations. :-)

Think long and hard before you decide to tow a trailer.
Not too bad if you can leave it somewhere, but little
travel trailers are very easy to steal. And parking and
backing up are no fun. Offroad, a trailer is likely to get
you stuck in mud or sand, at least for a while.

If you happen to have a pickup truck, why not put a
camper on it?

I too drive around in my '89 Bronco 11 when "Wifie" is not with me - she prefers our '00 Expedition - as we already live in the "wilderness" of the No. CA Sierras a camp trailer is no longer a requirement - just a good 4X4 - winch and tow chain to help the less experienced and foolish off roaders.

It's good to be prepared!

I leave the back seat out of my '69, but even so the bed is too short to
stretch out in. And there's barely enough room for food and gear.

Tents are OK in good weather. In bad weather---motels. :-)

LOL - the back seat of my '89 got dumped the first week I owned it - 10 yrs ago -makes a great "covered pick up" - ya - just enough room for my short 1 or 2 nights- no tents needed as I don't go if there is a chance of a storm - I like to see the stars and moon when I'm camping. Generally I don't camp in State or Federal camp grounds as there are so many "rustic-primitive" camp sites to chose from where I most often go. -Damn it is good to be retired and have the "man toys" to go with it.
