It seems when the light changes to somewhat dim my camera just doesnt shoot. What settings do I need to change? Still a newby

Does it do this in AUTO or in another setup like AV, TV, P, check your ISO settings, may be way too low

Depends on dim.
With no contrast or edge to shoot all your AF cameras stop shooting unless set to shoot with no focus confirmation.
I have used the M5 but not in dim conditions.
Try pointing the camera at something with contrasting edges in the dim light. Should help.

Try switching to manual focus. If the problem goes away, I would guess you have a ‘focus priority’ setting in the camera set that will not allow you to take an out of focus photo. I have a Nikon, that when I run into this type of situation, I switch to manual focus on the lens and it works for that shot.

Also on my Nikon D5500, my menu option is located under the Custom Setting Menu, Autofocus, AF-C Priority Selection, Release or Focus. When set to Focus, it will only take a photo when in focus, in Release mode it will take the photo immediately.
