First ship I rode on was a WWII sub chaser. In the head (bathroom to landlubbers) there was a trough with water streaming. Wooden planks were spaced appropriately. You urinated between the planks that you sat on. You could be sitting and someone urine might be flowing past your shoulder.

I recall older ships that had such facilities for the enlisted, in fact, the troop ship "Sultan" had such. Pranksters would set some paper on fire and it would float under some guy at the other end who was concentrating on business at hand.

My cousin told me how he had to use such a facility while in the army reserves. He would wait until it was empty, sit on one at the end, and invariably another guy would come in and sit right next to him!

Not a whole lot of difference in that and my Granny's outhouse except I did have some privacy in the privy.

In basic training during WWII at Camp Fannin, TX, when we went on long hikes and overnight training maneuvers, we called the outdoor toilets slit trenches. A long trench was dug a couple feet deep, and to go to the "toilet" we straddled the trench and did our business. Unfortunately, toilet paper wasn't always handy so we used leaves from nearby bushes. I knew nothing about poisonous plants, and once I grabbed some leaves from a bush similar to poison ivy. WOW! did I regret that for several days a day or so later! I had to go to the Army's version of the ER for medicaton until I healed up.

Frequently some joker would wad up some paper, light it, drop in the trough, and it could singe a few butts before going out. A 'sure-fire' wake up!

Yep,...that's exactly how it was in boot camp at Parris Island,...at Camp Lejuine,..and still that way when I again got stationed at Parris Island 2 years later.

For privacy I often waited till 2 or 3 AM to use the John,....if I could #@*#$

I liked steam showers,...turned on ALL the nozzles in the shower room steaming hot and showered alone at the same times,...always worked for me.

The smart guys used soap on a rope hung around your neck. Never drop the soap in the shower.
