Has anyone on here ever taken an online or mail correspondence Photography course like NY Institute of Photography and do you think it's worth the money? What are some other options? I know all the basics of Photography and have taken a class on it many years ago.

Hi Racmanaz: Althought I've not taken any courses with the "New Your Institute of Photography" They are a highly recommended place to hone you photography skills. From what I've read on here from former students they are well worth the money spent. Having said that, there are many free online tutorials that can certainly help you go a long way in understanding your camera and photography. There are also some great books on photography. I don't care how experienced or how new you are to photography, you can always learn something new.
Look at the Proud Photography School.

Look at Bryan Peterson's courses thru Adorama - if they are like his books should be worthwhile
I highly recommend the PPSOP.com (Perfect Picture School of Photography) founded by Bryan Peterson. I have completed 4 classes and am currently enrolled in the iMovie class. The school has excellent instructors and a wide variety of classes. I would suggest starting with Understanding Exposure and go from there.
I am curreently enrolled at New York Institute of Photography and just yesterday took the first exam for the first of 6 sessions. I still need to complete and submit the photo assignments for this session and then start session number two.
Looks like the entire course will take about 18 months at a modest pace.
I am very happy with the methods used and the materials. The recap DVD of sesson one is very dated but did peak my interest with regard to the advancements of the modern DSLR.
Not sure of your goals, but for me I was amazed to have already learned the difference between a "snapshooter" and a "photographer." And, I thought I was a pretty fair photographer.
Good luck and I think you will find the structure of this course better than reading random books. The books will mean a lot more after this program provides the foundation of your basic skills.
I took the attitude that the tuition was about the same as an average lens!

Are these online or in person? I see he was giving a class or two at Adorama - in person.

I can only speak for NYIP.
My mentor took classes there when it was a brick and morter school, I took "correspondance course" before computers. Recently, I completed the updated online course just to brush up, and to learn more about digital. People that took it a long time ago say it doesn't talk about digital. It does now. Some of the videos are very dated, but light is light, and composition is composition. The books and audio have been updated. Hopefully, the videos will be too.
I reccommend it highly. They also have other courses in things like photoshop, that you can get a discount on, once you've completed a course.
These are online, but he also does workshops in person. The way it works is: You have a lesson, usually script and video. He covers the points (exposure, backlighting, etc.) and shows examples. Then gives assignment of 3 pictures. You have 10 days to complete the assignment and upload them. He then critiques them by pointing out the good and also what you could do to improve them.
These is a Question forum that you may post questions. He, and also the other students, will comment on them. Not only do you get the benefit of your pictures being critiqued, you also see the other students pictures and critiques. You can learn a lot from them also. See how they chose to do the assignment.
You do not get a "certificate" or diploma, when completed a class, but that is ok with me. I want the knowledge.
Another point I like about this school, is they keep all your lessons, assignments, pictures, and critiques, as all as all students, for two years. You can go back and review them at any time.
Oops!! My reply did not go where I thought it would. I am referring to Bryan Peterson's PPSOP.
NYI has a free 16 page ebook... Checkj it out...
I chose The Photography Institute and find it quite good. I am just beginning but learning much. Check them out at thephotographyinstitute.com . I was put off by the pushiness of NYIP sales people but they have their job to do. I am sure NYIP is very good also.
