Weird thoughts come to old people with too much time on their hands.
Should we continue to call ourselves photographers? Photographers record analog images on film, process and print the images creating photographs and if you are a professional sell these little pieces of reality as a source of income. I suggest that we have become collectors and manipulators of electrons. For many, if not most of us, the great majority of our electron collections remain just that--electrons. I sent my last roll of film in for processing and what did I get back, a link to a web site so I could retrieve my electron collections. I have begun thinking of my images stored on my computer as Electron Collections and the prints stored in my photo albums and files as pictures. Electron collections only become images when they are viewed or printed.
Before I change my mind I am going to send this and see what happens

What do you expect to happen? Everybody has his/her own ways of seeing things in their own way (and that's a good thing)! So, welcome to the crowd!
I'm afraid that the mind is reacting in a negative way from what you are used to -- that is natural---it is easy to just overlook this phenomenon. And be happy!
I can relate to having random, strange thoughts, but how about a phrase coined, I believe, by MinnieV:
harvesting pixels.
She used it in reference to taking a photo in poor conditions or other situations where it's unclear whether there might be something worthwhile to
edit later on.
For those of us into playful pp, maintaining a substantial crop of pixels is part of the joy of the hobby

I like the harvesting of pixels much better than a collection of electrons. To me it seems that is what we really do.

So you don't have any photographs?

I think you need to step into the 21st century.
Film doesn't become a photograph until it is developed.
Sometime in the near future, film will go the way of vcrs and cassette tapes.

Any profession or activity can be deconstructed to its lowest level to the point of nonsense. One of my coworkers in architecture used to tell people that his job was "drawing lines on paper".
I guess by that definition, I'm a photographer.
At least until I can't do my own processing and printing or it becomes too expensive and I switch to digi...for now....photographer! :)
Your weird thoughts make me feel....... feel.............. feel.............................. electronified!

Sure, but Minnie's point (or maybe I should just say mine as I would hate to be mis-remembering or misquoting) was that we shouldn't
not shoot something just because conditions aren't perfect. We might find gemstones from the, um, ah losing the simile I'm afraid
At any rate, it's the description of "to harvest" that I liked so much.

Don't think so much. Get out and take pictures. Everything in life, including you, the dog, the Squirrel outside your window, the Earth, the Solar System, the Galaxy and the entire universe is a collection of electrons. Does that make you feel any better?

I'm into weird thoughts. Your post is intriguing and challenging but capturing light is capturing light whether electronically or on silver. However the old camera obscura guys who stood in a dark room with a pinhole and traced the image on parchment and then painted it.....were they photographers?

Yes, for example, when a Farmer Harvests his Wheat, Corn, or other Crop, he first must "Harvest" his Crop then ususally "Stores-it" in a Barn or other place it will stay safe, then sells it to a Store.
So, Now we as Digital Age Photographer's Produce our Photos, then we Harvest them off of our SD or CF Cards, then we Store them into our Computers where they hopefully be safe and sound until they are needed by ourselves or a potenial customer who pays for our "Crop of Photos".
