This sounds interesting to me because you are the first person I know whose EM-1 Mk II fails while photographing. I have not heard much about such camera needing repairs.
My first choice would be, as suggested, to call Olympus for a solution. A refurb camera like the Olympus EM-10 Mk II should be reasonably priced and it is an excellent tool that you can keep as a back up.

I don't know what's involved. It seems to be a power problem. It switches on the viewfinder for a few seconds then its blank. The battery is fully charged.

I'm not a techie, but my first thought is that the battery needs replacing. Hopefully it's that simple.

I like your way of thinking. I would do the same.

I would think. The Pen F is nice to use in some way it's nicer than the EM-1 but when you need high performance the EM-1 is better. So if you are going to have 2 cameras in the line up those are the 2 which compliment each other well.

Phone e-mail ahead to Olympus U.K., see if they think they can do something in time and rent for now, maybe even on a daily rate and possibly a different brand with 1x zoom and auto. Hire shops can't wait for a lengthy turnaround so some learn about simple fixes pretty fast.

Good luck. Bite the bullet and buy a new one, you can repair / sell the old one, but you can't replace your trip experiences. Cameras are replaceable, just like politicians, but it can feel a bit brutal when it happens.

Enjoy your trip

I have to agree - Bite the bullet. Not the happiest reason for a new camera, but I bet that trip is a major investment and you don't want to lose the opportunities. It is important for you to realize and understand that your time in NYC coincides with a major 3 day weekend/holiday here in the US. Hence your chances for a quick repair or even open repair shop go way down. Good luck and have a great trip.

There is a camera repair place on the south side of 34th street between 9th and 8th avenues in Manhattan. I have had a very good experience with them. Davidb1879

If you are still in San Francisco try Sammy's camera, at least for advice. Otherwise rent or buy a new body. You've spent plenty on the trip and it clearly means a lot to you.

Adolph Gasser on 2nd St in San Francisco is also a great resource. I've had great personal experiences there, although decades ago. At the time they were one of the great full Service Camera retailers and Pro Shops in the Country.

Thinking about it, I prefer to carry two bodies so I don’t have to take the time to change lenses and that also insures that I have the camera ready for the shot I want, and keeps my sensors cleaner. You probably did not want to buy a new camera, but this could be a blessing in disguise if you use more than one lense.

Yeah, like GAS relief, by default.

It does sound like a power problem, but could also be corrupted settings
or a poor electrical connection in the lens mount. It might be something
simple.

I assume you have tried the usual things, but in case not, here's a generic
list (I not an Olympus expert, although a long time ago I disassembled, cleaned,
lubrictaed and adjusted an OM-1):

1. Try removing the rechargable battery, wait 3 minutes, then replace it.
2. Check that the battery terminals in the camera aren't corroded or bent.
3. Try a different lens, if you have one.
4. Try replacing the BNL-1 battery (around $40). When rechargable batteries
wear out, they still indicate fully charged (voltage is good, but as soon as
you apply a load it quickly drops).
5. If that doesn't work, consider trying a factory reset (if it will stay on long enough):
https://seventrumpet.com/how-to-reset-olympus-om-d-e-m10-mirrorless-micro-four-thirds-digital-camera/

You didn't mention if it's an EM-1 or an EM-2, or if it's still under warranty.
If so, then Olympus will replace it. If not, your best bet is talking to an
expert on this model who can suggest other things to try.
