My personal approach to learning a program like Photoshop is to learn as I go. If you need to do something, google and check youtube and there's lots of material on what it is you might be wanting to do. Once you have that info, try it out and "viola", you've learned something new.
Plus, if at all possible, check facebook meetup.com and see if there's a local photography group in your area. This would be a nice way to network with local photo enthusiasts and be able to compare notes with them in person.
It's called 'masking', isolating something in one picture to put somewhere else. Scott Kelby's books address the subject but is like 4 pages long. You probably want more detail. His books are excellent for photo improvements.
The aftermarket camera manuals are outstanding, but make sure the author is not just rewriting the oem booklet. The Sony A580 book is an inch thick treasure. (treasure=$100)
You should look up and persue a membership in the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP). There is an unending amount of learning opportunitys from workshops to online training to books to seminars to DVD's, etc. etc. You will find NAPP with an easy online search. Good luck. There's more available than most of us have brain cells to store it in. If you are really serious about learning, attend a NAPP Photoshop World convention. It is amazing.
Hi and welcome... to learn about some of the terms besides the manual simply google camera aperture, what are fstops, what is shutter speed. etc... and you will slowly learn what these settings do and how they effect the photo. You will lean how different changes causes comprises to your work/photo. example faster shutter speed requires more light and/or larger aperture settings measured in f/stops, smaller number is a larger aperture. (ya I know sounds like it should be the opposite) and larger aperture reduces depth of field which is focus area minimized front/back of subject. Don't worry you will pick it up just take small bites :D

Hello from CT here : ) I'm not a professional photographer, but have the love & passion of taking photos where ever I go. I started taking photos with an older video camera of raindrops on flowers and have been addicted ever since. I own a Canon Digital Camera and I am now in the long process of trying to learn photoshop CS3. I'm trying not to get discouraged for I know that it can do alot. If anyone out there has any input on the easiest way of learning this program, please let me know ! Thank you & happy shooting : )
