On many cameras "Auto" should be labelled "Super Auto". It's basically a "point n shoot" or "camera phone" mode. It automates much more than just exposure. For example, in many cameras the automation takes over the AF system, too, and will use the most fully auto form of AF. It also usually forces auto white balance, makes the flash fully automatic, even dictates the type of image file you can save.
If you want easy automation without so much of it, try using Program mode instead. That fully automates exposure, but not all the other stuff.

No need to take another word on it. Auto is accurate and works just fine.

While photographing my house before the coming hurricane, I put it on auto for walking around and under the house. I then discovered that the Back Button Focus didn't work. I had to focus by hand. Do you folks remember turning something on the lens to make things less fuzzy? Just some info for those who might try auto sometime.
Very simple; Canon dSLRs programmed for BBF will temporarily revert to normal shutter focus when the camera is in other than a Creative mode: M, Ap, Tv or P.
This makes good sense because BBF falls outside the realm of full Auto. This is also true of various other settings made in a Creative mode such as shutter speed, Aperture, ISO, metering mode, etc.
All these settings will revert once the camera is back in one of the Creative modes.
did you check the switch on the lens. All of my lenses have a switch for auto focus and manual focus. I sometimes (inadvertently) switch the lens from "A" to "M".
I just checked my d7200 and the BBF workes in all modes.

Pretty sure my Canon DSLRs do that too. Helps whe handing camera to someone do photo you and your friends/family.

Just checked my d7000 ...same thing ... BBF works in all modes including Auto.
Interesting. I will go out on a limb and say the d7100 and d7500 do also.
Anyone know about any other Nikons?
I don't know about you, or the rest, but I'm pretty psycho.

Glad you asked because it made me check. Nikon D5600 BBF works in auto. Canon T2i BBF doesn't work in auto. I think I prefer canon's approach.
