Jason Lanier ( a longtime, award-winning former Nikon shooter, and who does give props to Nikon at the beginning of this video) has a thought provoking take on all of this here. Keep an open mind, it is worth watching.

Mirrorless REINVENTED? Is this a new beginning for Nikon or the Beginning of the End?

I don't believe Nikon has a lens that is labeled AF D, that is my point. AF lenses are labeled AF Nikkor or AF Micro Nikkor. The D should not be mentioned at all in describing lenses that will or will not work with the adapter. It is irrelevant.

The first autofocus Nikon lenses were labeled Autofocus Nikkor. The second series were labeled Autofocus Nikkor and had a D next to the maximum aperture on the barrel. AF and AF D (or AF-D) are the acronyms commonly used to describe these lenses. They require a motor in the camera for autofocusing. Some of the first AF-S lenses also have a D on the barrel. All of the AF-S lenses have a motor in the lens, whether the D designation is on the barrel or not. Basically the first two series of Nikon Autofocus lenses will not autofocus with the adapter.

Interesting view but not much help on the decision in question: I have no intention of getting a Sony. I tried a NEX 7. Nice hardware and features but the operational approach drove me nuts. Ditched it for a D5300 (now D5600).

I get his point on dual card slots. Nikon also ditched it on the D7500. Guess they truly don’t get that. But then wedding photographers got by with one roll of film at a time. They could use multiple cameras and/or smaller cards and change them... like film.

Thanks for that link. I value their views. Definitely cause a lean towards the D850 for now.

I like the improved little screen. That is one of my gripes with the D800.

I’m not concerned with the lack of a second slot. I never use it on my D800.

Bummer. Another Nikon downgrade, like the single card slot.

I suspect their idea is you’ll use the touch screen vs the buttons. But if so, why the unreadable little screen again?

Never fear. The next version will have your dual slots. If Fuiji can do it, Nikon can too. This is not their pro model, even if it is a lot of $$$. The big gun will be a few models down the road when the glass is up to speed, and nobody is using that big clunky adapter any more.

Summing up the input thus far I’m leaning towards my original idea: a refurb D850. Maybe the Z’s will reduce my wait for availability.

And I’ll keep hoping for their APS-C mirrorless to replace my D5600.

I rechecked prices for xqd cards. That’s a significant factor for me. $90 vs. $20 for 32 gig. Plus I’m not sure my computer will like them.

The truth has come out from the day of hands-on testing in NY.

Already reactions online like this "The fact is that Nikon cheated on the press release. They didn't mention the one card slot. They didn't mention the 12 bit compressed raw. They didn't mention the limits of the buffer. They didn't mention that the 12 fps become 5.5 fps if you want to have continuous exposure metering (which you always want if you are a pro), and so on and so forth. That is SO sad for such an historical company has Nikon, which wrote important pages in the history of photography."

IMHO the cameras will still be huge sellers. Nikon folks have waited so long, they will overlook any shortcomings. The extensive ad campaigns by Nikon and the stores like B&H and Adorama (which are salivating at the prospect of all those sales) will drive all those sales. Jared Polin (A Nikon shooter), at the risk of being not invited in the future, pretty much spilled the beans after his day with Nikon in NY. What is your take on what Jared says here ?

Thanks. I didn’t find this too useful. A half hour of rambling before they address the cameras (Z’s) and then random chat.

One growing common theme is that the autofocus on the preproduction models has issues.

This is what I was thinking also. Neither the Z6 or Z7 are intended to be the mirrorless equivalent of the D5 pro camera. Maybe there will be a Z8 that will be the equivalent of the D5.

At this moment it looks like Sony is the only brand readily available. Lexar's rerelease was delayed. Delkin is going to be selling them under their own name and it looks like with a Nikon label. There has been talk of a faster card that will substitute for an XQD. With all this going on maybe the price will drop.

I, for one, am not bothered by the noise of my DSLR's. I like the AF, the BB focus, the lenses I have been collecting since the 60's and the image. And I don't find any of my cameras too heavy. So the concept is not speaking to me.

The Z6 will be cheaper and faster than the Z7, Wait for the Z6. As for the Z8 and Z9 - just wait. The D5 is coming in the Zx Format

Now that we know Nikon’s new offerings what do you think about them compared to the D850 and each other?

I am planning to upgrade from my D800. I was waiting on availability of refurb D850s but the new offerings have my interest. Fortunately I have some time as I’m going on a 3ish month trip and wouldn’t want it delivered while I’m gone.

My main reason for changing out the D800 is that I don’t like the unlighted button/unreadable green screen control system. I also like a tilt screen and the touch screen on my D5600. All three candidates fix those.

I’d like lighter weight so Z’s are a little better on that score.

I’m not keen on xqd cards, so favoring the D850.

For most of my images 24MP is fine and I appreciate better low light performance. That plus price favors Z6 over Z7.

What would be your key deicision factor?
Now that we know Nikon’s new offerings what do you... (show quote)

Watch some YouTube reviews, especially Tony Northrup.

Whether you get a D850 or Z, you should switch to XQD. Much faster, more reliable. I use them on my D500.

Full disclosure, Canon shooter here..... According to hands-on reviews, the focus system, its speed, and the FPS capabilities of the Z series fall short of Sony. Coupled with the Nikon body being a single card slot, an amature feature, but priced at pro levels...... I have to rate this release as a C-
