I just watched it. Very interesting. Nikon declared its determination to become the number one camera manufacturer in the world. The head of the imaging production division said that Nikon will continue to make improvements and advancements to it's line of dslr and mirrorless cameras. The two mirrorless models seem to have been engineered to jump into the mirrorless foray in a very big way. It will be interesting to see the results from testing of the cameras capabilities and the marks they receive. I hope they do very well.

After wishing for Nikon to not screw up it was pleasant surprise to find that Z7 & the Z6 had checked the right boxes. But . . . ONE card slot?! What were they thinking? A $ 3,400 full frame "professional" camera with one card slot? I see some pros going the Sony route after hearing this. This just leaves the door slightly open for Canon for their mirrorless offering and it's probably going to have 2 slots.

Adorama already running an ad. 45 megapixel full frame sensor not much in the way of new Z mount lenses but can be had with a new adapter that accepts about 200 F mount AF lenses. Add some speedlights and cough up over $5000.

Any connections with Nikon Corporation that you'd like to mention, Pegasus--in the intersts of full disclosure?

Great question. Nope, I'm just a long time user and fan. I use their camera, riflescopes and spotting scopes.

If you look at the Lens roadmap Nikon released also,it looks like they plan on 5 or 6 additional lenses in 2019, and another 5 or 6 in 2020 in addition to the three announced with the cameras. I think they will try to release as many Z-mount lenses as quickly as they can, even though you can use F-mount lens with the adapter. According to what I have read so far, you should be able to use your Nikon speedlights, they should be compatible. I saw that on a couple of different websites today.

In 2019:

A 58mm f/0.95 lens
20mm f/1.8
85mm f/1.8
24-70mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8
14-30mm f/4

In 2020:

50mm f/1.2
24mm f/1.8
14-24mm f/2.8
Three additional Nikon Z lenses (as yet unnamed)

Jared Polin as well as Tony Northrup are incredulous that Nikon came out with a single card slot here. Northrup states he would NOT recommend these cameras to any pro, for that reason, and Jared says he will not forgive Nikon for doing this. Bet your dollar, Canon's fullframe mirrorless will join Sony and have dual card slots, which will make Nikon's miscalculation even more glaring. Maybe Nikon wants a reason for you to still buy the dual-card slot D850. Cheers

Think I will hold off ordering two bodies (need one for B&W one for colour), till the 85mm lens becomes available.

Why two bodies? My nikon gives me the opp to shoot B&W or color on every shot.

It’s a good start. I’m not a Nikon person but I’m impressed with what I see. Lens developments will be interesting to watch.
Next up, Canon has a tough act to follow. Looking forward to that as well.

Sony did too when they started in this field of endeavor. Canon, look at the M. We will see.

If I were in the market(I am not) for a FF mirrorless, The dealbreaker for me would be the single card slot.

I am surprised by the single card slot choice. But my first 7 years with a DSLR (2010-2017) were spent with a single card camera (D5000) and I never felt any kind of lack. Since last year I’ve had my D7100 and 2 cards. Since I use one card for JPEG fine and the other for Raw, I see it only as a convenience (I use the JPEG images mostly SOOC — occasionally cropped — and Raw to post process) so even with my 2 cards I don’t have a true fail-safe backup for card failure and frankly I don’t see that lack as a deficit.

I ordered four. first one here wins, the rest get cancelled. If I don'r like it, the winner will go back too. But i won't be waiting around for over a year to get one, I hope.

Jared’s such an absolutist.

... But I agree with him and with Tony on this. Even Panasonic has dual SDXC card slots in their three flagships — G9, GH5, GH5s. Most other brands do, too.

What were you thinking, Nikon?

But the difference was there was no heated competition in the mirrorless camp as it is right now. It was VERY critical that Nikon got it right the 1st time as Sony is on a roll with their mirrorless lineup. Nikon needed a home run. Instead they only got to 2nd base. Now the door is slightly open for Canon and you bet it's going to be dual slot. Also lack of eye tracking, lower battery capacity than the A9, no AF on the upcoming Nocta F0.95 are not helping Nikon. Sony just breathed a sigh of relief today.
