I'm no expert but I like Photoshop and Lightroom. Part of the reason is its relatively easy to find help on how to do different things. There are a lot of generous folks out there who provide free tutorials.

I have been using GIMP. The advantages are that it is Free, it is available for Windows or McIntosh or Linux and there are a LOT of Utube tutorials and books are available. Like Photo Shop, it will do a lot more than most people will ever think of doing. If you ever get into HDR work, then Photomatix is good and will do some basic things in addition to HDR processing. Cost is about $100 but upgrades are free and there are not subscription deals to enter into.

Agree on GIMP! It's about as "powerful" as most users will ever need, it's free and will run on any personal computer OS. People will say that there is a "learning curve", But hey, ALL software (even old MS-Paint) needs to be learned! Since it available on Linux,Windows and MacOS there's a large base of users to get help from.

Not to sound snarky, but you are not required to answer a request for info. There are many times I either read others suggestions. Perhaps learning something new or just move on.

I second this response. Loudparker, if you do not like a topic, skip it. Do not just try to drag it down. No matter what level you are on, someone here is on a higher level and could apply the same logic in replying to anything you could think to post.

A little humility goes a long way.

The OP has every right to post this question. I would argue that answering these posts constructively is what this forum is all about.

Yep, Just because something has been asked and answered before doesn't mean there's no one new to the game. Here we are in the 4K video era and there's a YouTube video about: How to drive a Model "T" Ford. (for non antique car folk, shifting a "T" is "different" to say the least.) Now there's a thing asked and answered since 1909, Half of US drivers knew how to do it at one point! now it's only hobbyists that do, Newbies will need advice. We as hobbyists should give that advice or we risk turning people off and killing our hobby for lack of "new blood", Plus New software comes along - Even those of us "in the know" might find something new.

Thought I would ask the community what there thoughts were on free editing apps as opposed to buying one. Any recommendations about free that would be good for a beginner. Thanks Bryan

If you are testing the water on developing your photographs out of camera on computer I can tell you what I did. I used both the Nikon NX-D and Canon DPP 4 software to get my feet wet. They are free. They handle basic tasks well Not sure what camera you use so that is a factor there. I also use Darktable which is free. It is pretty complicated but very powerful with lots of modules. With all that said, Iā€™m preparing to move to a Lightroom and photoshop subscription. Mainly because 98% of the 100+ members in our photo club use it and can help me learn with guidance.

This person is a relative newbie here with 17 posts as of this writing even though he joined up a little over a year ago. I think a little patience is called for.

Although your title states, "Best Photo Editing", you're asking about free. Those two terms don't exactly equate.

If you do a google search with the term

free photo editing software with layers

you'll find numerous editors listed. At that point, it's best to read through and see which one seems to fit your needs the closest.

Hello Bryan and as you can see you have many suggestions on 'FREE EDITING APPS' as well as the Adobe sycophantic devotees who seem to always miss the FREE part. My suggestion for FREE apps is Topaz Studio & Faststone Image Viewer. Give them a try, and you won't have $9.95 per month deducted from your checking account for the Professional PS/LR Cloud. They are wonderful FREE programs that I use, as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 which I got on sale at Adorama for 69 bucks. (You see you Adobe fan boys/girls I'm not adverse to Adobe products, just the monthly rental fee) Elements 2018, Topaz Studio and Faststone Image Viewer (also FREE) do everything I need to do in post processing, and you can get your feet wet in PP at no out of pocket expense.

Cheers & Good Luck;
Michael

That would depend on the camera you have, whether or not you shoot raw, and how you're expecting to use the software. Some cameras systems come with, or allow you to download, a free editing application geared to their cameras. If one is available for your's, that's always a good starting point.

Replies might be of more use to readers if the platforms they work on was mentioned. i.e. Dark Table is Windows only or at least not for Macs. šŸ˜

And that is why I did not mention the platform.
