I recently purchased the new Tamron 18-400 zoom lens to use with my Canon 80 D. I’m considering buying the Tamron Tap In Console.

Of how much value would it be in improving the performance of my new lens?

I bought the Tap In Console to keep the software updated, but that's just me.
Having worked in the computer industry for 40 years, I figure that new software
might enhance the performance of an older lens. Can't prove anything, though.
But I do feel better.

Primary benefit is the software upgrades. It is worth it just for that. I have the Sigma version and did adjust focus for my 150-600. However, you can start by trying the basic micro adjustments through the camera body. If that is not sufficient, reset the camera and go through the rather long process of adjusting the 16 (or so) adjustments possible with the Tap-In.

Double check this. I'm pretty sure I read that the Tap In Console is only for the full frame 18-400mm Tamron lens and not the crop version.

??? I do not think there is a crop and FF version of the lens. There just the one version.

I ckecked the Tamron web site and the 18-400 zoom is a crop sensor lens and is compatible with the Tamron Tap In Console.

The greatest benefit would come from Canon Rebel shooters who cannot tune the lens focus in the camera body. The lens itself can be focus tuned using the dock at multiple focal lengths. Other lens adjustments are pretty minimal on that lens. The ability to install firmware updates without having to send the lens in to the manufacturer is always beneficial.

Have a few Tamron lenses including the 18-400mm (nice, versatile, lens) and the Tap-In. The problem with the "fine tune" feature on my Nikon bodies is that you only have one adjustment for a lens, which is great for primes, but not so great for zooms. The Tap-In allows you to adjust several points at different distances and zoom settings. I test each of my lenses using LV, manual focus and AF at different distances and zoom factors. When the AF is softer, I use the Tap-In to walk it in. It takes a lot of effort. For example, it took the whole weekend to adjust my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8, but when I started heavily using the lens, it was well worth it.

You are correct, there is one a DX version of this lens.

I think one question should be is how to use the software? I have both the Tap-in and FoCal software. My problem is that FoCal (I think) will not generate/create data points shown in the Tap-in console software.
