I am not a fan. It has gotten too crowded and dirty for me. We usually stay in Chincoteage, Va. It's only about an hour away so we can go on a day trip.

Have gone there pretty much every summer for thirty years for our family vacation since it is only a two hour drive. It is very crowded and EVERYTHING is expensive for what it is. Very honky-tonk, but several nice restaurants. Most people rent a condo for a week. We paid $1700 for a one bedroom condo ocean front at the Golden Sands for a week in July. With all the taxes and fees, it was over two grand when all was done. As for hotels, I like the NEW Holiday Inn on the ocean. There is a nice Quality Inn on the ocean with a pretty indoor tropical atrium, pools and hot tubs that is also good. Best prices are probably on the bay side, however, there are many older, small private hotels and appartment rentals a block or so off the boardwalk down toward the southern end of town that are probably cheaper, depending on what you are looking for. With the slow economy, most places will have vacancies. Beach will be very crowded, and heavy traffic on main roads. Try to go mid week as traffic backups on weekends getting there can be miserable. Southern beaches are better, but if you wait till September or early October, the crowds are smaller and weather is generally nice, making OC a nice early fall get-away destination.

I have also been to Rehoboth and Chincoteague. Rehoboth, although smaller, is just a few miles up the road from OC. Similar traffic and prices, but no tax in Deleware. Don' t know too much about the hotels there. A very nice one right on the ocean with a New England look. Have always wanted to stay there, but never have. More motels out on the main highway. More residential neighborhoods with cottages for rent.

Chincoteague seems more laid back. We stayed in a LOVELY Comfort Inn there, on the water. Beaches are along the highway and are maintained by the state park system. Less commercialized.
Good luck in your search and enjoy your trip where ever you decide to go.
