Ok, well as so often happens I changed my mind in the shop. I decided to forgo the long zoom in favour of the faster lens and ND filter. So I bought the Sony RX100 VA. It fits the shirt pocket and admittedly lacks the long zoom of the VI but is just that little bit smaller, quite a bit cheaper, Sony are offering £150 cash back in the UK , so pretty good value. Love the tiltable screen and clear EVF, it has the updated processor of the VI, so IQ performance should be good. The Panasonics are just that bit bigger and would be better for a jacket pocket. Just got to charge it up and get out for a play now.
Thanks for all the replies.

Sounds like you made an excellent and well thought out decision, Grumpy. That may very well be your EDC (Every Day Carry) camera, for many years to come.

What started me on this path were two lost opportunities where I needed a quick start up and by the time I had faffed about getting my camera out of it's bag the chance had gone. Not being, any longer, in the full flush of youth, I needed something I could just get out of my pocket, switch on, focus and fire. Lightness is also a factor of course. I find that in those circumstances a purely screen based composition does not suit my sometimes less than steady hands, hence the need for a viewfinder where i can steady everything with my arms pressed into my body. Either, I will have to go for medium IQ with one of the smaller (cheaper) point and shoots, not my preferred option by any means, or push the boat out and go for a one inch sensor camera. I won't know that until I try out some different models for useability next week. Although as one contributor has already pointed out, some of the shortcomings are not immediately apparent and only rear their ugly heads in real world useage.

Your words: "push the boat out"
I don't remember seeing this metaphor used, here in "the Colonies". Very vivid word picture.
I believe your equivalent would be "go for it" as in whatever the cost.
Depending on ..... "pushing the boat out" means 'getting your feet wet.'

Ah, but, "push the boat out" emits so much more imagery; making "go for it" sound so vaguely "adolescent".
Hey Grumpy, thanks for letting us know what your final decision was. It is always nice to bring a thread, like this one, to a close.
Use your new camera in Good Health!!!
I have a Sony DSC W830. 8X zoom, 20 megapixels. Won’t do a lot of things but better than nothing
