I'll be purchasing a new 15" Macbook Pro very soon and have been using PhotoShop CS 5.5 on my previous Mac. Are there good reasons to upgrade or should I just move my current version to the newer computer?

Well Artz, my guess is you are going to get a plethora of suggestions to jump on the Adobe $9.95 per month rental plan!😂

Loaded question? Are you asking about compatibility of an app written for an old operating system? Or, are you asking about the wisdom of replacing with an Adobe subscription? Or are you asking about changing to something besides Adobe's offerings?

If you like what 5.5 does, install it and see if it works.

I currently own not subscribe to PS/CS 5.5 and I am concerned about the compatibility of my old software with the new Operating System. I'd prefer to stay with PS for Layers and other features. I had not even considered yet other apps. As for the last, The Apple store usually offers a better deal on PS at the time of purchase, so I'd prefer to have an informed decision before walking into the store.

I'm using CS6 on my win10 64bit pro PC and have had no problems with it. I did the free trial of CC and couldn't find a reason to upgrade, so I removed it before the end of the trial period.

The latest version, Photoshop CC, just works better, and if you upgrade your cameras/lenses it will support them. I question the rationale of buying CS6 just so you can say that you own a license to outdated and soon to be orphaned software. That is not a good use of money.

I have always kept the older versions on my computer as far back as Photoshop version 5.5 ,at times its fun to play with them.

If you are happy with your current version of Photoshop by all means deactivate the account and reinstall it to your new computer, as I have always done with no problems at all...

You paid good money for it, it is yours , best of all you have the disc and all of the executable files.
There no more Photoshop software s on discs anymore...

If you want the very ever-changing latest version then look into it and see if it is right for you...

I myself am comfortable and confident in my abilities with my CS5 version and see no reason to upgrade to the latest and greatest version.
If I am not certain of my newer operating systems compatibility I can always run it in compatibility mode, so far I haven't had to do this.
The current operating system I am using is smart enough to run it for me without a hitch.
The subscription version does have many new bells and whistles that are very excellent, you will have to learn more new things.
So this decision is completely up to you...
Remember what ever you do never part yourself from your disc they are like gold..

"Better" is the enemy of "good enough."

I believe Adobe offers a free trial period for Photoshop Creative Cloud. So you could give PCC a whirl before buying it. Only you may tell if PCC suits your situation and your needs. That's my suggestion.

But just to be clear: I subscribe to PCC. Its new tools and filters alone have made this subscription worthwhile. The PCC subscription includes no-cost upgrades and update as they become available.

Good luck.

I'm using CS6 on Sierra, and it works but has a few problems (file open windows always open small and have to be re-sized; batch resizing of more than 300 or so photos is impossible, whereas on Mavericks I could do a couple thousand at one go). So - try it and see if you can put up with the little problems. In general it should be OK.

I have CS4 running on Windows 10 desktop. It was 'gifted' to me a few years ago where I used to work. It works great for me.
Of course Adobe auto opened an auto upgrade to CC 2018 Creative cloud, I have yet to used them but the CS4 works fine.
Why don't you try your 5.5 version on the new puter ? you maybe surprised it will work for you.
I like the fact of owning my own install disk and re-installing at will as I change puters.
Good luck and let us know how it works out, I am curious because I am 'toying' with the thought of getting a MAC desktop or laptop, used of course.

So long as your computer remains in 32-bit architecture PS 6 and less will remain compatible. If your current 5.5 is authorized on two computers, make sure you de-authorize on one before trying to get beyond 'demo' mode. If 5.5 has the horsepower to do what you want, then the extra bucks just gets you some frosting.

CC does have some worthy upgrades, but if you're happy with what you're using, I would stay with it (as long as you shoot with a camera that is still supported in that old ACR )!

If you do decide to upgrade be careful which option you pick. (I just upgraded recently from CS6, and there are some really nice new tools and features that the old version did not have.) . They sell a version called Lightroom CC for $9.99 a month and it is a completely cloud based system designed for you to be able to edit your pictures from your phone, your tablet, your computer, or someone else's computer. All your photos are stored in the cloud and not on your local computer.I think you get some basic amount of storage for the $9.99 then you have to pay additional for more storage. IMO the editing features are somewhat limited and more like the stuff you get on a smart phone than what you are used to in CS5.5. They also have a version called Lightroom Classic CC that is included in what they call the photographers package, also for $9.99 a month and it includes Lightroom, Photoshop, AND Lightroom CC (with less storage than the stand alone option). The Photographers package though is just like your current Lightroom and Photoshop where they reside on your computer and all your photos reside wherever you want them. I have been very happy with my newer versions, particularly LR as I was on LR5 and the new one has many new features that are much more powerful.
