All critters adapt to survive, and if humans are in the area, they adapt to our behaviors.

What a bunch of BS!

There are times when people get confused and can not discriminate between mice and men... Steinbeck wrote a book on that. [ sorry could not resist that comment] Using mice for bait is vastly different than using a Rino to bait a Pocher in the Jungle.

In the 60s doing research on radioactive trace metal, we used rats. Expose, kill, analyze. The result demonstrated how problematic atomic tests were ... Strontium 90 sound familiar?

Baiting with mice and rats, or bating mice and rats with cheese and using the trap to trip the camera, in my eyes OK. Are we in a debate of "do mice have souls?" Well, perhaps yes if they are reincarnated photographers.

Taking a photo of a hungry man in exchange for a burger [not true don't hit me with a tripod] would that baiting have been wrong??

Ok, I will make the photo, man baited and state baited with burger... or of a model saying gave her money to be photographed!! Come-on now... get real!

What have you been smoking or drinking? Wonderful little nonsensical story. There is no grey area regarding the baiting of owls with bought rodents. It is either right or wrong. It's now your turn to get a reality check!

right or wrong? black or white, name calling and (in your following post) claiming that someone would be under the influence of drugs/alcohol if they don't agree with you.... Maybe just maybe others can have thoughts other than yours and still have all of their faculties. Maybe others can have another opinion that is more nuanced than yours and not be drunk. I would consider your responses those of either someone who is overly emotional about their posts, or too small minded to accept that others have opinions that, while not in line with yours, may be just as valid and thought out as yours. That is my opinion (I reserve the right to be wrong, and to change it if I am shown otherwise) Not stated as fact, or as an attack, just an opinion

Please consider being kind. It would be awful to be only the second person in history to be free of flaws.

Jean the Eagle Lady boosted the economy of Homer, Alaska by baiting eagles on a large scale. Many an eagle shot used commercially was shot there. Jean lived in a run down travel trailer in the middle of a parking lot until a photographer, who profited so much with her shots, bought her a new small home to replace it. The new home had a big sign on the front that said Eagle Spot. Jean was loved by a lot of folks. She passed away in '09. I met her once during the off season.

Was she right or wrong in what she did??? I don't know.

Bill, some people will do anything to make money and ignore the consequences.

Here is the answer to your question:

Jean Keene (October 20, 1923 – January 13, 2009), also known as the Eagle Lady, was a former rodeo trick rider who became the subject of national attention due to her feeding of wild bald eagles on the Homer Spit in Homer, Alaska. Although she had many supporters for the feedings, she was also criticized for drawing a large population of eagles to the area. After her death, the city of Homer passed a law prohibiting the feeding of predatory birds.

Some environmentalists were concerned with the large population of eagles drawn to Homer by Keene. They believed some eagles have been harmed due to their familiarity with people. Others were worried about the spread of disease or the change in the birds' natural migrations. Allegedly, some other bird populations in the area, such as sandhill cranes, loons, and kittiwakes, have been driven out or killed by eagles, though there is no direct evidence. In fact, kittiwakes have increased in the area to the degree of founding a new colony close to Keene's home. According to an ABC News broadcast, many Homer residents now consider the birds a "menace", as they have been known to cause car accidents and steal pets. In a few cases, the birds have been shot at. An ordinance passed by the Homer City Council in 2006 prohibits the feeding of eagles within the city limits; however, the city council granted Keene an exemption, giving her special permission to continue feeding bald eagles within city limits until April 2010, at which time Keene would have been 86.

I wonder what happened the first year the birds showed up for breakfast and the kitchen was closed?

I suppose the only ones that know, are the people that live in Homer.

I agree that baiting owls with pet store mice (or any baiting) is a Bad Thing. I gotta say though, when I saw the photos, my first thought was "how did he get the mice to stay put long enough to get the photo? Is it dead, sedated, tethered somehow?" Just from a curiosity point of view, not to encourage other photogs. If this is out of line, just skip my comment, I am mostly interested in the hows and not the whys in general.
