Nikons new Z-cameras look great in the ads, but in reality are sadly flawed: The hype didn't match the reality.
TONY AND CHELSEA NORTHRUP ARE BACK FROM NIKON NYC EVENT. THEY GOT ONE HOUR WITH A PRE-PRODUCTION Z CAMERA AND ARE NOT HAPPY ON MANY LEVELS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUii9dTwPkwJared Polin also was in NY and isn't happy either:
"All Things NIKON MIRRORLESS VS SONY (Is Nikon CRAZY?) RAWtalk 248"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2C9Z0foXOwAlready reactions online like this "The fact is that Nikon cheated on the press release. They didn't mention the one card slot. They didn't mention the 12 bit compressed raw. They didn't mention the limits of the buffer. They didn't mention that the 12 fps become 5.5 fps if you want to have continuous exposure metering (which you always want if you are a pro), and so on and so forth. That is SO sad for such an historical company as Nikon, which wrote important pages in the history of photography."
IMHO the cameras will still be huge sellers. Nikon folks have waited so long, they have huge lens collections, they will overlook any shortcomings. The extensive ad campaigns by Nikon and the stores like B&H and Adorama (which are salivating at the prospect of all those sales) will drive all those sales.
But serious pros will stay away from these as one card slot is a deal-breaker, poor battery life is a deal breaker, poor buffer is a deal-breaker, low ACTUAL frame rates are a deal-breaker, No EYE-AF is a deal-breaker. And new buyers who are not already invested in Nikon glass will objectively look and compare and shop elsewhere . Nikon is asking a premium price for these new Z-cameras and new Z-lenses, but is not delivering the premium product. Very sad and disappointing to me and loads of others.
Sony has nothing to worry about from these Z-cameras. Nikon will hold onto their flock, and that will mean big sales. But when three of the biggest Nikon fans, Tony & Chelsea Northrup, and Jared Polin can't even recommend these cameras, Nikon has a problem that wont just go away with a firmware update.
Canon is watching this Nikon misstep, and you can bet when they announce their own fullframe mirrorless cameras soon, they won't make the same mistakes as Nikon. And Sony is readying its next camera releases which will greatly raise the bar again with their new 5.6 million dot resolution EVF ( both A9, A7RIII and both Nikon Z-cameras have the best of current EVFs with 3.6 million dot resolution) . And Sonys next camera will have 4k/60p and stacked sensors and more to move past anything in fullframe mirrorless that Nikon and Canon will have. Bet your house on it. Nikon and Canon will find out, coming late to the party, that it wont be so easy to knock Sony off the top. Cheers
