Not only have they been photo contests winners with Smartphones. The Official White House Photographer is a woman. She uses a full frame Canon camera, and travels extensively with the President on Air Force One. She is the second woman to hold that WH title.

You've got to be kidding, what's next, children in photography, and art contests?
That would leave no chance for those of us, who paid all the bucks for the newest, best gear, and read every article and book, and watched all the videos, to ever win a contest.

Does buying the latest and best, reading all the books and watching all the videos REALLY confer talent?

It's not the camera, it's the photographer.

Possession of the most expensive equipment only means you have money: it does not imply talent.

Or you owe a lot of money.

I have read where some grand prize winners of photo contests have been taken by a smartphone. And some winners have been women who aren't even professional photographers. You could say being at the right place at the right time is beneficial. Nothing wrong with that either.

You either have talent or owe a lot of money because if you have the money you must have talent.

I think women are just as capable as men when it comes to photography and equal in every aspect of life. As a man I think gender discrimination is not good.

I have a DSLR an if I was just about to buy, it would be mirrorless. many of my of my pro friends have already dumped their DSLRs and gone mirrorless.

Genuine question: why is that pithydoug? What is it about a mirrorless that appeals?

I subscribe to the magazine "Arizona Highways" and the yearly photo contest winners have been published. This is open to both amateurs and professionals. This years grand prize winner shot was taken with a Fugifilm X-T2. This is to show that the most expensive DSLR's no longer rule the domain.

Another example of wrong Cause and Effect Relationship conclusion. So common nowadays!

Can a kingfisher even carry an Instamatic?

Yes, and if I had had a mirrorless camera instead of an old fashioned dslr I would have gotten the picture. Unfortunately it is now only a memory, real or imagined. Senility has some perks.

The best camera in the world won't turn out a good photograph if the photographer doesn't have the skill and talent, just like the best paint brushes, canvas and paint won't make a great painting if the artist doesn't have the skill and talent. Talent is something one is born with. Either you have it or you don't. My grandson has that talent and he is a very skilled photographer. Even as a very little kid he took pictures of everythilng, and even his silliest pictures seemed to have "something.". Nope, your gear, no matter how good it is won't make great images for you. You make the great images.

But the talent might have nothing to do with photography. A talented bank robber might buy expensive photography equipment and take terrible pictures.
