photoshop cc-quick mask question

help please!
when i make a selection on a photo and press "q" or click on the quick mask icon in my tools panel, all that happens is my "layer"
in my layers panel turns red. i do not get the mask on my selection or anywhere on the actual picture! ( i know about invert)
what am i doing wrong?

i figured it out... in my quick mask settings the opacity somehow got set on 0.

Glad younfigured it out. Lots of knobs on that Photoshop box. You can do anything with it but it also requires a lot of expertise and experience. You just added to the former as a result of the latter. It is the nature of the process of learning. Do not be discouraged.

thank you and you are so right. one step forward 2 steps back is how i feel about it.
are you able to tell me why when i make the mask, invert and use curves to change the lighting, the changes are being made to both the masked area and the non masked area??

Hmmm. I'm not a guru but I have done that with success. Question: in the layers panel, do you have the mask selected? Download attached Screen Shot to see example of what I mean.
