Any thoughts on the Tamron 70-200 G2 vs the latest Nikon version of the same lens? Other than the obvious differences in $$$.

I have the Tammy G2 and love it, but I did not ever try out the Nikon version. There are many sources online comparing the two.

Just bought one last week after a lot of research. I looked at the Tamron, Sigma, and Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, Nikon VR II. The Sigma and Tamron are about the same price at about $1300 and the Nikons are $2800 or $2100. PCMag.com puts the Tamron a little bit above the Sigma saying the Sigma has a significant drop in resolution at 200mm. So the real question is the quality of the Nikkor glass worth the additional $800 or $1500? For a professional who expects a return on his/her equipment - yes. For me, it was not. Here's the review: https://www.pcmag.com/review/353225/tamron-sp-70-200mm-f-2-8-di-vc-usd-g2?source=autosuggest . BTW, also seriously considered the Nikon 70-200 f/4 as an alternative.

If you do not need the f2.8 lens an excellent alternative, from what I know, is the f4 version.

The Sigma Version is an older lens and they are supposed to come out with the new version possibly in September (already a year late though according to early rumors). I was going to wait on that lens and then look at the 3 (nikon, tamron, sigma).

It may not exactly match the latest Nikon version but its close and you can't beat the price. The only negative for me was the weight, but that's typical for all versions.

Edit: Attached to the wrong post, but the message comes through.

I researched those lenses and the Sigma yesterday. Matt Granger, the Nikon Guy, has a 4 video comparison of them on YouTube. The Nikon that he tested was his own lens, the previous model (VR2). In the autofocusing tests, the Nikon was much faster, especially in low light. I’m considering buying that Nikon used, but in good condition, rather than a new Tamron or Sigma.

I have owned a Tamron 18-270 for almost four years. Earlier this year I got a Tamron 24-70 G2 for my D850. I too am wanting a 70-200 for my D850 and have thought about the Tamron G2 also. However, based on my copies of the 18-270 and the 24-70 G2, I am saving my cash for the current Nikon 70-200 FL version. I sent the 24-70 back to B & H. I have played with the Nikon 70-200 FL on my D7100 and its auto focus is the fastest of any lens I have ever tried. Subject acquisition and lock on is REALLY REALLY FAST! I am staying with Nikon glass for my DSLR's.

All things being equal, I feel my Nikon 18-200 DX lens is sharper overall than my Tamron 18-270...on either my D7100 or my D850, and I have used both lens on both bodies, and have had the shots reviewed by a third party.

No, I already have the Nikon 70-200 FL. It is a great lens, I have owned about every model of this lens and Nikon hit a home run with it. Very sharp, very fast, with fantastic IQ and color saturation. My shots are better than ever.

I know two photographers owning Nikon 70-200mm lenses. One owns the older version f2.8 lens, and the other owns a 70-200mm f4G. Both have good reviews. However, Nikon's latest 70-200mm f2.8E FL ED VR, the one that is priced at $2800, is rated as the very best 70-200mm of all. If, I were to purchase a 70-200mm f2.8 lens, it would be a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2. Tamron also hit a home run with its 24-70mm f2.8 G2. For quality and savings, your best bet is the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2. IMO. It's affordable.
