I was taking photos of a Heron and Egret in the lagoon at the Chicago Botanic Garden when this Bald Eagle showed up. I had no time to change any settings.

That's my question, as well. You're shooting large birds in flight, it doesn't matter what kind they are. Absolutely beautiful picture !
Timing is everything and you hit it on the head. Great job!
Location and timing ...the rest was up to the photographer and his camera ...

With this camera/lens combination I would normally use a shutter speed of 1/1200 to 1/1500 sec and also would have to increase the ISO.
