This occurred to me the other day when I saw four or five cars pulled over by police while I was out driving.

A cop pulls you over, comes to your window and says, "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
"Yeah, the inspection expired, and I haven't gotten it inspected yet. Sorry."
"Oh, I didn't even notice that. I stopped you because your brake lights aren't working, but thanks for pointing out the expired inspection."

I doubt this would be a real-life situation because cops do a thorough check, visually and on their computer, when they pull someone over. Still, it's always good to remember: "You have the right to remain silent." And - "Silence is golden."

Now, it's time to laugh -

An experience to share:
I was pull over after unrealizing I had illegally made a right turn on a Red Light (sign stated, No turn on Red.) So the officer, after checking my stats on his computer, asked me, if I was aware of my driver's record?
I respectfully said, "Not really", and he then proceeded to tell me I had an Excellent Driving record, and to keep it up. Then said, Have a nice day and returned to his car! So, I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.

Congratulations. That is where the discretion to issue a citation comes in.

Do any of us want to live in a country where there is no discretion on the part of the officer? Many states have laws against spitting on the sidewalk. Yet many people, including me, have done it. I usually try to expectorate mine in the street but many spit in the main walking thorofare. Receiving a citation here in California for spitting would truly be a slap in the face when people defecate on the sidewalk in San Francisco with impunity.

Once that sort of thing happened to me. I was still in High school. I ran a red light. A Poluce Officer pulled me over and asked "Do you know why I pulled you over?" I said "no." He than proceeded to tell me my taillight was out.

I was doing 75 in a 65 on I-5 in the left lane, I saw a flash in my mirror, he was so close I had to scoot down in my seat to see the bubble gum machine going. I pulled over and he asked me the same question, I told him I had no idea thinking I was getting a ticket. he said your tag is expired. I my reply was What! I got out and he showed me , I told him I l had just bought the car a few months ago. I went to my cars passenger side and got my papers, ( try that today) and showed him. he told me to get the tags and said have a good day. no tikee. evidently the renewal went to the prior owner.

Congratulations on getting no citation. Did you really expect the previous owner to submit your name to the DMV. Isn't that your responsibility to check your own tags and know it needs to be renewed? Just asking what I think is a common sense question.

BTW, 75 in a 65 zone is generally no problem to an officer depending on the flow of traffic.

Here's the link to an interesting article "The Benefit of Having the Same Name as a Police Officer". One part talks about how you name can impact on the type of speeding ticket.

I was stopped for speeding in central Oregon by a state cop, the office of which had only 4 men. I have a eastern european name and my son is one of the four in that office. I never said a word, just handed him my license, took it and started writing, never looked up or nothing to see if I looked like my son. man he was cold!

When my son got home he told me that he had heard I had got a ticket.

I assumed the state would keep up with the new registration.

How can they possibly do that if most likely they have no idea the vehicle was sold. Did you go to the DMV to tell them you bought the vehicle so it could be registered in your name? If not, they most likely have no idea. They probably sent the previous owner a renewal notice but he is under no obligation to tell them the vehicle was sold, at least in most states I know of.

There are some good cops everywhere.

I am in the state of New South Wales in Australia an I passed my driving test in February 1968.

In 2013, I had a new car and got a bit keen with the right foot, caught doing 127kph in a 110kph zone. I passed my licence to the cop while saying that I had been driving since 1968 and that this would be my first ticket. He passed back my licence and drove away. Last year I was sprung by a fixed speed camera, no friendly chat about this one. Damn, first ticket at 49 years driving, did not quite make it to 50.
