Hi, I’ve been reading the posts for awhile — this is my first try to write one!
Flying into Portland mid September and staying at Augusta first night. Taking hwy 3 to Bar Harbor for 3 days, then 3 days going So on 1 to Kennebunkport, 2 days in White Mts. This leaves an extra day for coast or White Mts.
Please give suggestions for lighthouse or other tours, lobster, and scenery points not to miss!
Have booked hotels.
Attempted to do this trip at 911– but got stuck in Chicago!!
Thanks for your help.

Google your route and there should be lots of suggestions and perhaps even a road trip itinerary that could be printed off.
There are a bunch of light houses off of US-1 between Bar Harbor and Portland. The problem is that some of them are off of 1 by ≈30 minutes one way (Some are only a few minutes, like Rockland, but the light is way out in the water at the end of a breakwater.) I'd suggest looking at Google maps to see where it would be in relationship to your travels. We usually take US-1 from Freeport to Ellsworth and then Route 3 to Bar Harbor. One year we hit three lights on the way and it took a good portion of the day. FYI - Here is a list of lights in Maine:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lighthouses_in_MaineLots of stuff to see along the way, including the neat little towns.

Thurston's lobster pound near Bar Harbor should be on your list. Cheap and good. Kind of a dive but the food is excellent. A tent on a wharf. Watch the dates because they close (I mean shut down) after tourist season. As an appetizer try their Crab Louie dip. A bit out of Bar Harbor and need a car. The photography in the area is excellent, also. While there visit Acadia NP. Cadillac Mt. is great for sunrises.
Many excellent suggestions so far. This subject has been discussed here on the hog just search
The Portland Head Light is a good lighthouse to take. It is generally open sunrise to sunset. I have arrived there before sunrise while still fairly dark and the gate was open. At first I was disappointed as it was foggy, but got a great shot of the light beam! They do chase you out after sundown so getting that post sundown glow shot might be tough. Another in York is the Nubble Lighthouse, about 45 minutes or so south of Portland. No time restrictions as you park in a lot nearby. The lighthouse is on an island just a short distance off the mainland. A rowboat is used by the keeper to get back and forth during higher tides...can walk the rocks at low tide. Good sunrise shots. Again, I got there early while still dark and used a flashlight to find good view points down on the coastline rocks. There were already a couple of photographers out there setting up when I arrived. I posted some shots here at the time so you may be able to check them out. There was one other lighthouse further up the coast I checked out but don't recall the name. I'll verify and get back in another post.

I am a big fan of getting info from the local Chamber of Commerce Dept. at different locations and AAA.

Boothbay Harbor would be a photogenic stop.
The other lighthouse I shot during our short stay was the Pemaquid Lighthouse. Pemaquid is north of Portland which was our base during our stay. Pemaquid lighthouse has very interesting rock formations down to the coastline, so shots from below the lighthouse using the lines of rock striations is pretty cool. You can walk totally around it to get different angles - a flower bed out front also makes a decent foreground.
Portland and the Nubble are great lighthouses but another favorite of mine is Pemaquid Point. A bit of a drive south from Damariscotta but ,I think, worth it.
The thing that many don’t realize about the coast of Maine is that it is fjiord-esque and longer than the California coast. This means that many lighthouses are located at the tip of a finger of land and they may take 30+ minutes to get to. The Quody light and Portland Head Light are iconic as is the lighthouse near Bar Harbor (name escapes me). Someone here suggested a guide to Maine lighthouses and that would be a good purchase.
In NH be sure to take the Kancamagus Highway near North Conway. Also take the cog rail to the peak of Mt Washington. If you’re hiking on Mt Washington be prepared for extreme weather. There’s a reason the roof of the ranger station on top is held in place with massive chains. You’ll love it here, have fun!
Kennebunkport restaurant suggestion: Alisson's (good lobster and lobster rolls. Right in center of town) I was there last week.
Don't miss Federal Jack's in Kennebunkport, good beer, coffee food view of the river

Bob M has mentioned Boothbay Harbor. If you get there be sure to stop at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens; great photo ops.
If you drive through Wiscasset look for Red's Eats, great lobster rolls.
We'll look for your photos.
