The Laws of Computing

When computing, whatever happens, behave as though you meant it to happen.

When you get to the point where you really understand your computer, it's probably obsolete.

The first place to look for information is in the section of the manual where you least expect to find it.

When the going gets tough, upgrade.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite malfunction.

To err is human . . To blame your computer for your mistakes is even more human, it is downright natural.

If at first you do not succeed, blame your computer.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked perfectly.

The number one cause of computer problems? Computer solutions offered by family members.

IT professionals have discovered that the cause of many problems is PEBKAC.

When I programmed computers in assembly language decades ago, I always wished there was an RPM instruction. RPM meaning โ€œRead Programmer's Mindโ€.

Early on, I had opportunity to be regaled with tales of really D U M B people who called in for help with their computers. These tales came from a former student. My favorite story was the older woman who had been given a computer, but did not like it anywhere in the main part of the house so she moved it to the basement and could not get it running. After several minutes on the help line, it was determined that the lady had plugged the computer into a power bar and had plugged the power bar into itself instead of a wall outlet.

Love it.
Tech Support: Do you have Windows on your computer?
Caller: No, but it is on a table next to a window. Is that OK?

Good rule for tech support: Never underestimate the ignorance of an end user. Notice it is ignorance, not stupidity. Not everyone is interested in tech knowledge.
