I have the 20mm f1.8g (N Gold Ring) and it is also made in China. It is an incredible lens.

I don't agree with your statement that "You don't need VR for a 35mm f1.8 lens." I shot a video of a indoor wedding reception using a Nikon D5500 and a Nikon VR 18-55 mm kit lens and a Nikon 35mm F1.8 lens. I pride myself on hand holding a camera for very steady shots. All of the footage with the VR 18-55mm lens was rock steady Almost all of the footage with the non VR F1.8 35mm lens was almost unusable, very jittery. I have now decided that I will think twice about buying any lens without the VR feature.

How disappointing that the newer Sigma art lenses don't have VR! And the new Tamron that was just announced doesn't either.
Cant figure why there is that trend lately. First it's cheaper to make a lens without VR and perhaps they figure that since higher ISOs are quality now, people can take advantage of that. Also these new lenses probably wont need much to offer them for the pending mirrorless cameras which should surely have IBIS in them.

For now, for me I am starting to look back to Nikon's for my pending lens purchases. The ones that have VR.

Nikon has their least expensive DX lenses made in China. Usually, the ones that do not have VR. Just because it was made in China, doesn't mean it is a Gray Market lens. They can be marketed for sale in the USA. Thailand produces much of Nikon's quality gear. Including the Nikon D850. Write down the serial number of your lens, and call Nikon to see if it is Gray Market? Be advised, your 35mm f1.8 DX lens sells Brand New for $197. You don't need VR for a 35mm f1.8 lens. I'm certain you already know that.

I have some fx fifties made in China also. A 1.4g and a 1.4d from China and a 1.4 non d and 2 f1.8s from Japan. My 35f1.8 dx also made in China
