Personally, think the wider lens is a little too wide for general photography. You can get some great shots, but being that wide, ful pull back to 18mm will start to fisheye a bit. I try and keep from that. I’m assume this is on a crop sensor, so won’t be quite as bad as I’m stating. On my full sensor, I still like the full zoom capability of a 35-105, or something similar, as it gives you a wide variety of shooting scenarios cause it always (happens to me at least), I cant get close enough to my subjects.

Read the OP's original post, she has a 5/4. The mentioned UWA lens is a great piece and is fun to use. The24-105 is just flexible tool. I a man in mid 70s and find I am wanting to cut my kit as much as possible.

I hope the cruise is enjoyable.

A wide angle is used mostly for perspective and not to "get it all in" ...

take it along and try to get an interesting angle on life. A good landscape lens can often be a telephoto ...

Hello! I am a senior woman whose strength is less than when I started taking photos at age 8! An avid amateur. I am taking a trip to the Inner Passage/Alaska. Was going to bring Canon 5D M4, 24-105 mm and the Canon G3X with the 600 optical zoom. Also a travel tripod...carbon Sirui...carrying it all in a Think Tank Speed Racer 2. (They are amazing to work with...not affiliated). Taking the smaller camera as my older 5D broke on the first day of another amazing trip! Question is...is it redundant to take the 16-35 lens? Not whale watching...taking a helicopter to a glacier and then taking a dog sled ride. Also taking trips into towns and gardens. Any insights would be most appreciated. Thank you!

Amazing photos! I do agree that the bottom of the helicopter adds to the overall image!

My four trips to Alaska I carried a full frame camera and 24-105 lens. I really didn’t need much else. The majority of my photos were all within that range. /George

Definitely take the 16-35. I just got back from Alaska. There are numerous opportunities for landscape pictures, and with this lens you can get great shots with the foreground and mountains all in focus at the same time, something you cannot do with a long lens. Best to shoot at about 24 mm, as this is the sharpest point for this lens. Minimum f8 or f11. ISO 800 is fine with the 5DM4 which I have. You can correct any distortion in post processing. That said, you also need a longer reach lens. I used the 70-300 I have, and it worked great.

It will be raining days before, the day of and days after the proposed excursion. I was told they run the excursion rain or shine. Do your settings work for a gray rainy day? Never shot in rain before. Many thanks!

4 trips! This will be my one and only trip. If my M2? (don't remember) hadn't broken when in Oregon, wouldn't think of taking two cameras. I see the wisdom of using one lens but also want to have a photo similar to the helicopter photo posted here.

God bless you. I love the 16-35, sharp and superb color. I would also suggest the 75-300L, lighter and great focal length. Above all be safe and enjoy.

Thank you for your comments. I have an older Canon 70-200L f4 that weighs less than the 75-300 (1.7 vs. 2.3). I will be 70 in December bound and determined not to downgrade my equipment due to weight!

Take the 16-35 if you can. It is a lightweight lens and there will be times when you would like the "scene" of where you are shooting. I agree that you should also have a longer lens for wildlife. in general, I like the 24-105 for travel (though never go anywhere without my 16-35), but in Alaska, I pretty much used my 16-35 and 100-400, and the latter with a teleconverter. I had the 24-105, but never put it on the camera.

I'd take the 16-35 for walking around as well as a prime for depth of field shots. Someone recommended a 24mm. That's a great choice b/c it's a small (light weight) lens. When I'm in AK I always have an IS 70-300mm for wildlife shots when I can't get close.

I know, I gave my 70-200 L 2.8 II to my son and opted for less weight. Take care and have a great trip.
