While I have lived a life less interesting and adventurous than yours, I too regret not having taken pictures of my involvements over the course of my life before 2002, when I began recording things using digital photography.

Let me please offer that today your hindsight may intelligently inform your eye and conscious awareness to take worthy photographs.

Good luck.

I am 65-years-old. I bought my first camera at age 60.

I have lived on five Continents.

No photos.

I have lived in Valdez, Alaska and the great Alaska Penninsula where the great bears roam.

No Photos

I walked all the way from Barranquilla, Colombia to Peru throught the Andes Mountains.

No Photos

I guarded Rudolf Hess at Berlin’s Spandau Prison.

I adopted an orphaned kangaroo and we rode around in my jeep drinking XXXX beer.

I was a bodyguard in Rio de Janeiro.

I went AWOL and rode an elephant taxi into the Golden Triangle opium people.

And I lived in a tiny fishing village in the Philippines with the most toothy beautiful children

No Photos – No Photos – No Photos

And this makes me sick with myself.

You guarded Rudolf Hess years before you were even born? Simply amazing!

Hess died in 1987 in prison. At that prison (Spandau) there were actual guards. It is certainly possible that the OP was a guard.

To me I'd rather read your life story in a book rather than seeing any pictures. Life well lived with no regrets. Since it has not been your job in the past, now photography can be your hobby for the future. Enjoy your future travels!

I say...write your stories and find someone who is a good sketch artist to apply visuals to your narrative...your memoirs could make some great books during the second half of life!!!

Wait till you can afford to upgrade both cameras, like I did, and then see photos you missed or wished you had taken. Lesson, never walk out of the house without your camera.

Ah, yes-- I do remember.

And those memories will inevitably infect your photography, your way of seeing. Please start now and post your photos. Many here are willing to help you with any technical stuff; but we all will benefit from another set of eyes, that have a heart attached, sharing their vision of the world.

Travel books can be fascinating and can 'paint' wonderful pictures in the mind!

How about learning Photoshop and using those memories for creative inspiration.

Sounds like a great life. I would suggest learning to draw to reproduce those memories.

If you had the camera you might not have seen all those wonderful scenes because you eye was tuck to the viewfinder. At best the viewfinder only let you see a 2 dimensional view and not a 3 dimensional view.

You're kidding, right?

At 65, you've potentially got a lot of good photography ahead of you if your health allows it. I hope it works out for you.

I don't find your story sad, and certainly not disgusting. You have led a varied and unusual life. Be pleased about that. Prior to the digital age, you may have had great difficulty photographing and processing those unique images. You would, however, be an interesting person to have a conversation with.

You still have some good memories of those times though, not as bad as when your possession are taken from you. My camera and photos, including negatives and few other worldly things to me were all taken as we tried to leave Tehran in early '80s.

Would be nice to have photos to look at and reminisce.

In the words of Allen Watts; the map (photo) is not the territory (experience). Enough said.

Do not beat yourself up for the past. It is the past and will not change. Enjoy the memories. Remember what you saw and let it give direction to how you want to photograph now.

All of us, whether we have a cellphone camera or regular camera, have missed shots that we wish we hadn't. That is just a fact of life. I can only hope, that as I age further, the memories will continue to be there to remember and shape my path forward with my photography.
