This youngster has been hanging around for months now and is not afraid of anything. I was sitting in the back corner of the yard where I propagate plants and he lands not 7 feet away in the low hanging branches of a tree. He stares at me and proceeds to fuss at me. I carried on a conversation with him until he flew off into the upper branches. He has just about decimated the squirrel population and some birds so most birds are hiding when he is around. I don't let the cat out unless I am with him because he is the same size and general color of a rabbit. And we do have rabbits as I have flushed several from my overgrown garden. I don't have the proper lens to get a really good shot of him. That is the Bluebird house on which he is perching. I tried cropping but the results were poor. I'm not sure the type of hawk as he is a juvenile.

Looks to me like a red-shouldered - especially with the bright yellow legs. Keep trying - you'll get him yet.
My friend was in the garden with her little dog when the hawk swooped down and grabbed the dog with her real close to my friend. Good luck with your cat.

Corolyn, understand the frustration of getting a decent photo, however, you still got a photo of him.

The bird is an adult Red-Shouldered hawk. They are noisy, but not really any danger to your pal the cat. Rodents probably make up the largest part of its diet and the birds in the yard scatter because this bird resembles a Cooper's Hawk which is very adept at snagging them for a meal!
WOW... he is a big one!! Smart not to let KitKat out.... and hope he doesn't get any of your garden visitors!!
Looks like a Red-shouldered to me too, Corolyn. We have one that hangs around our back yard looking for squirrels. The young ones seem to be almost fearless.

Thanks, Bob! I wasn't sure but that was one of my choices. I should have paid more attention to the legs!
