My grandson was working late one night on Sept.7,2017. As he turned into our drive way, this Porkey Pine ran across the drive in front of his car & went up a tree in our front yard. This was after midnight.
This "LOOKS" like a juvenile, but we didn't want to get too close to see. Did NOT want to go to an emergency room to get any quills taken out of us. These pictures were taken by my grandson on his cell phone.
They are pretty ugly & pretty scary looking, for sure.

They actually have quite cute faces and are extremely passive. They'd rather run away if possible.
Their name is actually spelled:porcupine.

Now that you mention it, I "do" have the name spelled incorrectly. "Porcupine" for sure. I will go along with passive, but, cute faces?
I guess it is in the eyes of the beholder (+-). I still say ugly & scary (to me anyway).
Thanks for your comment.

Nice photos. Porcupines are quite docile. You were safe as they are unable to, throw, their quills. Only if you attempted to pick one up would you be stuck.

I ate a young one once, or tried to eat one. Imagine a steak marinated for three days in Pine Sol. Not good.

I like the pictures they look so cuddly. I ate on too once. Three days into Army Escape and Evasion training. It was the only thing in the Sierra Nevada mountains that was slower than I was. I always described the flavor(?) as old boot soaked in turpentine. I don't think we had Pine Sol back then.

Yes, the flavor could be described as turpentine. As they eat the bark of pine trees I am sure that is where the pine/turpentine flavor comes from. Terrible stuff.

Thanks to all of you. I don't think that I could bring myself to eat one of them though. Don't think I could even try one as a taste.
Again, thanks for all of your comments. Appreciate it.
GOD BLESS.
Lelon.

In Canada they're illegal to kill because they are often the only food someone lost in the woods can hunt down if you don't have any weapons.

Of course armadillo meat and porcupine meat are from different animals, right? The taste of one has nothing to do with the taste of the other. Animals flavor, in part, comes from what they eat. Porcupines eat tree bark, often pine. Armadillos, I think, eat bugs and some plants. Big difference.
