I'm looking to upgrade my current Nikon D5300 to either the Nikon D7200 or D7500. Besides the D7500 costing a bit more, does anyone have an opinion on which camera is better and why? Thanks for your anticipated input!

D7200. One of my absolutes is having dual memory cards. Worth more than a flippy screen. And if you get the D7500, put it in Airplane mode; the WiFi is useless.

My choice was the D7200 over the D7500 mainly due to the fact that the D7200 has dual memory card slots and the D7500 does not. Dual card slots give me peace of mind when I travel. On the off chance that a card fails, I still have images on card #2. One of the cards becomes a means of back up when traveling. Cost was not a deciding factor.

Two months I had the same dilemma. I went with the D7200 because of the higher megapixels and the dual slots. It’s a wonderful camera, as I’m sure the 7500 is.

Considering the similarities between the three cameras and the differences, neither camera is much of an upgrade, unless you're into video, and in some aspects, a downgrade. Although it's a bit more expensive, the D500 offers more of an upgrade than the D7200 and D7500. I don't have a D7500 but I do have D7200 and a D500 and if you want to upgrade resolution you're going to have to go full frame. The D7200 is an excellent camera as is the D500. For someone interested in pixel count then the D7200 is the better choice, but I believe it's the same as the older no longer manufactured D5300. The D7500, and D500, have even fewer pixels so for someone looking at resolution, it is a step backwards. As far as abilities, the D500 pretty much does it all, a really well made full feature camera. It's kind of like a crop version of the D5. Based on personal experiences I'd strongly recommend the D500.

I have posted about my experience on such an upgrade of other threads, but I am happy to recap it here for you.

I upgraded from a D5200 to a D7500. I considered the D500 and the D7200 but eschewed both.

The D7500 has the sensor and metering system of the D500 and it has a much larger buffer and frame rate compared to the D7200. It has a better monitor than the D7200 (I've compared them side by side outside,) and it is a touchscreen, which flips up or down. The AF is not the same as the D500, it is similar to the one in the D7200 but it has several refinements. Some people complain the D7500 only has one card slot, I don't see that as a problem. My D5200 only had one and I've never had a problem with that and the D60 before that. I have a 128GB card in the D7500 and I back it up religiously. You would have to do the same with 2 card slots, as you're more likely to lose the camera than have an SD card go bad.

The D7500 has better weatherproofing than the D7200, or so I'm told but I don't let it rain on my cameras and try not to take them swimming. The D7500 does not have an add-on grip, but I find the camera more than big enough and heavy enough as is compared to my D5200. It's a chunk. Battery life is phenomenal, far longer than the quoted numbers. I did buy an extra battery just because, but I have never come close to running out of juice on a single battery during a full day or even long weekend of heavy shooting.

The D7500 uses the newer Nikon menu system and it works really well with the touchscreen, very intuitive.

The D500 does not have a built-in flash, and even though I already had an SB-700, the built-in flash does come in handy sometimes. The D500 does not have the full gamut of auto settings, so sharing the camera with someone who is not familiar with exposure settings becomes more challenging.

I am very pleased with my D7500 and I would recommend you buy the pamphlet on the Secrets of the Nikon AF from Steve Perry; he's got it all updated for the D7500.

You may believe it but it is not correct

You make the same stupid worthless comment every time someone brings up the D7500. Neither does the D5300.

Thanks but I bought a few lenses for the D5300 that would work on either the 7200 or 7500. They are not compatible with a full frame.

Which lenses do you have for your D5300?

I have all Nikkor DX lenses: 10-20 f/4.5-5.6, 35f/1.8, 40 Micro f/2.8, 18-55, 18-140 f/3.5-5.6 and 18-300 f/3.5-5.6.

I usually run around with the 18-140 mounted and the 35 f/1.8 in my pocket.

The D7500 is a lot heavier than the D5200; I use a Black Rapid strap.

I have the Tamron 18-400 and 10-24 wide angle. Both fit my needs as I take them everywhere.

There's nothing stupid about fact; there's nothing worthless about informed opinion or comments about that opinion. There is something stupid and worthless about wasting one's time and intelligence on a meaningless flame.
