Wait!!! Don't decide until the new mirrorless specs are released next month! Perhaps you should get the newest technology and latest camera!

One thing is obvious between the two cameras. The price.

Only a thought....about three years ago I purchased a "used" D4. It was used in the sense as it was owned by a private party but had about 1000 clicks on it. $2500. Probably cheaper now. I have used it A LOT for sports (bike racing, both mountain and road and hang gliding) and wildlife (Birds In Flight). Outstanding piece of gear. Thrilled with IQ and low light performance. Incredibly well built. Banged it hard a bunch of times and not a glitch. A buddy of mine shoots 100% pro sports and uses the D5 platform. He loves it for what he does. We recently did a friendly, in the field, side by side comparison and we agreed. Although the D5 had a number of distinct advantages AND for someone who could justify the 250% cost differential, the D5 made all the sense in the world. Otherwise, given my needs we would both choose the D4 AND maybe get a D 850 as well. Used D4 (or D4s) + new D 850 = New D5. Good luck.

I shoot primarily travel: landscape, ancient temples and megaliths, and street scenes. I use my D850 with lense ranging from sigma 24-105 f4 to Nikon 24-70 f2.8G ED to Nikon 35 f1.4 to cover focal length, available light, and need to crop. Satisfies my needs.

Good afternoon - Since the D500 has the Expeed 5 processor of the D5, Shoots at 10fps and you have a worn out D800; I think I'd opt for the D850, put a grip on it, and your in business. I love my D5 and have a D810 so i'm in the market for a D500 to replace my D7100. Good luck With your selection.

If I were thinking about purchasing a new nikon which one would you recommend that I purchase (D5 or D850)? I'm looking for responses from people who have used either camera but do have some real-life knowledge of the differences in use. Thanks.

Interesting how nearly no one answered the question the way he asked it. And so many are recommending other cameras they happen to like. Also how many UHH'ers actually own both a Nikon D5 and D850, that is a lot of cash! I'm not who he'd ask either, but I fell he choice would be based on a lot of factors only he could answer.

That is very sound advice first question what will it be used for primarily??

either is excellent and it pronanly would be a coin toss in reakity until you decide what will it be aimed at primarily.

Happy shooting

I have to agree, he asked what is the best choice of the tow bodies he referred to?

Not are there any other options.

The respondent who did in fact use one of the choices while his buddy shot side by side at the same venue may of done the best job of answering him.

I have one of the cameras and am not sure of the the other.

850 step up from 800 would seem to be a good choice though.

I think that was a solid vote for the 850.

Good luck
