Got my SX40 on Friday and couldn't wait to try it out - not time to prepare but just couldn't wait to have a go - hope to post some better ones soon.

Yes there is shadow but image is still ace. I could live with that shadow wheather it came from his hat or cast from the building above. Great image 1 I would not score you loss of marks for that shadow. 2 & 3 also good images Well done all round! 5 stars awarded go to the top of the class!

For crying out loud, look at the Man's head just below his hat on both sides, the underneath of the hat and the black all over the part of the violin against his cheek, then look at the splotch of tan near the top of the violin near his other hand which isn't black like the rest of the background was filled in. I hope none of you are umpires, referees or line judges at the Olympics going on over there right now, you might want to take advantage of your NHS and go in for an eye exam?

Thanks macadafey - I know it is not perfect - but I was standing on the other side of the road and had to quickly dodge the passing heads in a busy street in the centre of Chester. Was not aiming for any prizes just wanted to test out the SX40.

My monitor is way off somebody has changed the profile from my ICC to home cinema. I see it now on my other monitor. Agreed the black colouring in is not real and you can see scribble marks. When making a selection remember to feather it for a more realistic look. About 3 pixels is enough.

You need to keep resampling an area near by to match the black of the suroundings then resample again to make sure there is no repeatition. Also use a softer brush and maybe lower the opacity then go over the area more times for extra control.

I think that shadow is the chin rest on the violin...suppose to be there. I think you did good for right out of the box. Enjoy your new camera.

Post here for "critique, general advice, or just for fun."

Well I guess you received all of the above. Even a short course in post-processing.

Just to show that your new camera seems to work o.k.
Don't be scared away and keep on shooting.

Congrats on your new Canon.
