Thanks! I live in Wichita Falls, Texas! Just north central TX, bordering the Red River and Oklahoma
Dallas is 120 miles away and Lawton, Oklahoma is 50 miles from here.

Before I get a new camera home, I stop by my insurance and insure my camera. My daughter dropped one of my Nikon film cameras several years ago and insurance took care of complete repair--even a new body. Insurance on cameras is dirt cheap as far as I'm concerned. Dick

I have Farmer's Insurance and all I have to do is phone my agent and he issues a binder that provides immediate temporary coverage. Once I get home, I scan and e-mail him a copy of the bill of sale (with serial numbers) and the new equipment is added to the policy's schedule of covered items. My new equipment is always covered before I leave the camera store.

As soon as I pick up a camera, especially a DSLR, I put the strap around my neck.

I have at times seen derision for such a practice here on The UHH but I carefully ignore it and always use the neck strap on my DSLRs and a a wrist strap on my bridge and point and shoots. Not drops, no repairs.

What does "derision"mean?

It is a common enough word, perhaps you should look it up if you are interested in learning its meaning. I'll give you a hint, it's not a positive.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Had a similar problem with a camera that was a couple of years old. Snapped off the lens when it fell off the rear car seat. Anyway - Send it to NIKON for repair. It was a little painful - did without it for about 4 weeks. Came back in GREAT shape and worked for many years.

I dropped my Nikon D5100 as I fell and also broke my ankle. Crawled over and retrieved the pieces of the lens and the camera which although it did not appear damaged did not auto focus. After repairs in Tempe AZ - $299.00 everything worked except I'm sending it in for the second time (in 3 years) with a sticking mirror and shutter release button. Not sure that is related to the first damage or not but now always carry a backup D7200. Good luck

REMEMBER THIS as you pursue the matter.

Camera bodies for "parts and repair" bring surprisingly good prices on eBay. I suspect there is a whole marketplace of buyers who buy and repair, and flip broken cameras for very good business. Do a search on eBay and add in parts and/or repair and you will be quite surprised at the prices paid for these camera's.

My friends, I have never had to think about repairing my cameras before. What are the steps one takes to bring value back to my
dropped Nikon? It has a cracked rear panel (corner of the rectangle) and it does not have auto-focus anymore. It still is OK on
manual focus and there are still images stored and replayed when a lens (18-140mm) is attached and captures taken. Any consideration
or discussion will be appreciated.

Two words: Neck Strap. "Don't leave home without it."

If your in a position to and think quick enough, kick whatever you drop, turning a square hit into a glancing slide along the floor.
this will work with cameras but not bowling balls or cement blocks
