For real, I once, last Fall in fact, tripped over a footing in a park near a small fountain and fell down and tore up my knees pretty badly. I managed to save the two cameras I had around my neck. I took all the damage.

I wasn’t implying that people are only killed on train tracks in America. I was stating that (and this is by no means scientific, just my perspective, based on following photographic news stories worldwide):

1. I’ve never heard or seen in print, or know anyone (this does come up as a topic of conversation with photog friends in other countries) who knows of a photographer killed by a train in any other country. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened, just that the “killed by train” news everywhere else appears to be youngsters and/or “impairment by alcohol/other dangerous substances”. Then there’s the suicides and accidents at train crossings without barriers... and always a few who try to beat the train by attempting to drive around the barriers...

2. I first started working in the US in the 90’s, and was immediately struck (no pun intended) with:
A. How many photographs of train tracks there were around, and;
B. How every photog I met had either a port where train tracks were a feature, or;
C. Knew at least one other photog and/or model who had been killed or injured by a train, while shooting on/near tracks
D. In 2 cases that’s both C AND D... 😱

As experts on this post have stated, there’s seems to be absolutely no sane reason for people to be that close to the track... yet it appears to happen more regularly here in the US than elsewhere... unless there’s some conspiracy not to report such incidents everywhere else in the world?
I wasn’t implying that people are only killed on t... (show quote)

Kids who wear headphones while walking near the tracks can't hear the train. My grandson's classmate was doing that and the train caught the strap of his backpack and dragged him under the train. He survived, but he lost his hand and has a permanent brain injury. Never went back to school.

Then, of course, are the idiots who lay on the tracks, like the drunk who wanted to die; but the train only cut off his legs and he survived. He did this next to a park of children across the street from my daughter. Her husband called 911.

First of all,,, If you are near railroad tracks that are being used and you are near a real train moving on those tracks , remember two things, a shifted load can wipe you out just as fast as a derailment that you will never see coming. Keep your distance..... The second, if the top of the rail shines, it is being used. Trains do not make the noise people think. they are quiet. The crew could be busy doing other things in the cab and never see you to whistle... Rust on top of the rail means the track is not used very often. Not to say it is not used, as if that was the case it would be pulled up...

I’ve actually been asked by fifteen different clients or models during my photography lifetime (and Yes, ALL fifteen occasions were in the US), if I could take portraits involving railroad tracks. I’ve always refused, of course.

One of my grand daughter's had some of her senior pictures taken on train tracks. I don't understand the mindset of her photographer to do that. They weren't unused tracks either.

There is a whole fresh market right on the tracks in Thailand just south of Bangkok. I saw it in person years ago, but alas had no camera with me. This happens several times a day, every day.

Several accidents have taken place, in some cases with fatal results, at Yellowstone National Park. People have ignored the warnings of Rangers who have advised them not to come too close to wild animals. Some of those accidents have involved bears.
At the Everglades National Park I have seen tourists trying to hold the tail of alligators bathing in the sun in spite of the many warning signs posted all over. Fortunately, there has never been an accident that I know of.
Always be aware of the surroundings. Your life could depend on it.

OKay...

You can NOT be struck by a train (moving or otherwise) IF you make use of standing on - near - or by, this trackage......

A good place to photograph train tracks is the High Line in NYC. No trains although you might be run over by people walking.

As a boy growing up in Baltimore, it was common for us to hop slow moving trains to get around. We would also break into the caboose and get the dynamite caps and place them on the tracks for fun. It was always fun until a friends dog got killed. When you are young you do stupid things. In the 50/60's living in the city sucked.

The thread has gone from getting hit by trains to train track photos.

I suggest posting the track images on the Trains section of UHH:
